Pair these barriers with suitable enrichment; toys and climbing opportunities support a cat’s behavioral needs, but they are not a substitute for securing an opening.
Secure cabinets first
Childproof cabinet latches are the directly recommended first measure for cats that pry open cupboard doors. The American Humane Society advises using them to keep cats from opening cabinets, and the Wisconsin Humane Society gives the same guidance.
- Identify the openings and hazards. Notice which cupboards your cat can open and how it does so—pulling, pawing, or levering the door. Prioritize cupboards containing medicines, cleaners, chemicals, laundry supplies, food, or trash.
- Fit a childproof latch. Choose a latch compatible with the particular cabinet and install it according to its instructions. The cited humane-society guidance supports the category, but does not compare latch styles or name a tested model.
- Test the closed door. Try the same opening motion your cat uses. If the door gives way, reposition or replace the latch with a compatible option and test again. A latch that is not secure against your cat’s actual behavior is not an effective barrier.
- Keep risky items secured elsewhere, too. Store medications, cleaners, chemicals, laundry products, and food out of reach or locked away; keep trash covered or behind a latched cabinet. A latch is a barrier, not a reason to leave hazardous items exposed.
For doors opened by turning a knob
A cabinet latch and a room-door guard solve different problems. If your cat operates a doorknob, Petco’s veterinarian Q&A suggests a child safety door guard, a product category made for childproofing doors. The source does not identify or test a specific model, and it does not establish that guards fit every handle or stop every cat.
Check compatibility with your door and handle, then test whether the guard prevents the knob movement your cat uses while still allowing ordinary household access. If it does not fit securely or the cat can still open the door, choose another compatible barrier rather than relying on the guard.

Support your cat’s behavioral needs
Physical barriers address access; they do not explain why an individual cat opens a cabinet or door. The Merck Veterinary Manual describes environmental management—including shutting doors and installing deterrent devices—as a way to prevent unwanted behavior, alongside meeting feline behavioral needs.
Enrichment can include opportunities to scratch, sniff, chase, pounce, climb, and hide. The Nevada Humane Society explains that suitable enrichment depends on a cat’s personality, age, health, and mobility. Consider play, climbing or perching spaces, and other activities suited to your cat. Enrichment supports wellbeing, but the available guidance does not establish that toys alone stop cabinet opening.
