The reliable way to keep a curious cat out of food and household hazards is to remove access: store tempting or dangerous items behind closed, secure doors, clear unattended surfaces, and build a quick latch check into your routine. Smells, bitter tastes, and a cat’s past good behavior are not safety measures.
Make access control your first line of defense
Start with the places your cat can reach, not with attempts to make hazards taste or smell unappealing. ASPCA Poison Control warns that a pet may swallow something before realizing it tastes bad. Secure storage and supervision are more dependable than deterrents.
- Put food, medicines, cleaners, laundry products, batteries, pool chemicals, and diffuser liquids in closed cabinets or other secure storage your cat cannot access.
- Use a child-safety cabinet lock where a door or drawer is easy to open, especially for drain cleaner. Choose hardware that fits the cabinet, stays secure through repeated use, and an adult can release promptly if needed. Follow its installation instructions; no lock should be treated as guaranteed cat-proof.
- Put leftovers away promptly, keep counters and floors clear, close trash, and shut pantry and cabinet doors. Make checking that doors and lids have latched part of your kitchen routine.

Secure food, medicines, and other common access points
Pantry, counters, and trash
Keep food in closed cupboards or containers and clear it from counters when you leave the room. Close the trash so a cat cannot investigate scraps or packaging. ASPCA Poison Control’s 2025 case data included food and drink in 16.4% of exposures reported to it; frequently reported items in that group included grapes, raisins, xylitol gums, onions, and garlic. Medicines and bags
Keep human medicines in a closed cabinet, not on a bedside table, counter, or in an open bag. ASPCA identifies ibuprofen, naproxen, and acetaminophen as hazards for cats. Do not leave a purse, backpack, or pill organizer where a cat can investigate it. If a cat may have reached a medicine, call a veterinarian or poison service promptly rather than waiting to see whether signs develop.
Cleaners and laundry areas
Store cleaners, laundry supplies, batteries, pool chemicals, and diffuser liquids in secure cabinets. Keep drain cleaner particularly inaccessible; ASPCA advises childproof storage because cats can get into cabinets and sinks. Follow each product’s label, clean spills promptly, ventilate when appropriate, and keep your cat away from treated surfaces until they are dry. A cleaner’s risk depends on the product, its concentration, and how exposure occurs, so “household cleaner” is not a single toxicity category. Plants, bouquets, and flea treatments
Keep lilies out of a home with cats: ASPCA flags plants in the Lilium and Hemerocallis groups as feline hazards. Store flea and tick products securely and use only products specifically formulated for cats; ASPCA also flags permethrin products as a danger to cats. Garage and garden storage
Include garages and garden areas in your storage check. Keep pool chemicals and other hazardous products behind secure doors, and do not leave containers or spills where a cat can reach them. If you are unsure about a particular product, contact a veterinarian or poison service with its label available instead of guessing from the product category.

What to do if your cat may have been exposed
Contact a veterinarian, emergency veterinary hospital, or animal poison service promptly after a possible exposure. Do not wait for symptoms. If the cat has seizures, difficulty breathing, or is unconscious or unresponsive, seek emergency veterinary care immediately. For a corrosive product exposure, do not induce vomiting unless a veterinarian specifically directs you to.
- Move the cat away from the substance without putting yourself at risk.
- Call your veterinarian or an emergency veterinary hospital. In the United States, ASPCA Poison Control is available at (888) 426-4435.
- Keep the product packaging or take a photo of its label so you can identify the substance and share it with the professional advising you.
- Follow professional instructions about whether the cat needs immediate examination or other care.
