Cat-proofing means removing hazards and controlling access—not making a home completely risk-free. Start by inspecting rooms from your cat’s level, then secure cords, small objects, chemicals, plants, windows, and places where a cat could get trapped. Repeat the check as your cat grows or learns to climb, jump, and open things.
Start with a cat-level inspection
Look under and behind furniture, inside open cabinets, along window ledges, and around appliances. Check for narrow gaps where a cat could become stuck, accessible surfaces holding small objects, and dangling items that invite batting or chewing. ASPCA and VCA offer practical guidance for inspecting a home before a kitten arrives and as its access changes: ASPCA’s pet-proofing guidance, ASPCA’s inspection checklist, and VCA’s kitten-proofing guide.
Pay particular attention to anything a curious cat can pull down, chew, swallow, climb into, or reach by opening a door or cabinet. Recheck the home after rearranging furniture and whenever your cat discovers a new route onto a counter, shelf, or ledge.
Secure cords, strings, and small objects
Electrical cords can be chewed, while blind cords and items such as thread, yarn, rubber bands, and hair ties can entangle a cat or be swallowed. Route cords out of reach where possible; unplug accessible cords when they are not in use. Binding or covering an exposed length can help manage access, but a cover should not be treated as chew-proof. An electrical cord cover for cats is an optional aid, not a substitute for keeping cords away.

Secure windows, doors, and hiding places
Fit openable windows with secure screens and use locks where appropriate. A screen is part of a safety setup, not a guarantee that a cat cannot escape. Make sure exterior doors latch and close, and check narrow gaps and storage spaces before shutting doors. ASPCA specifically advises using secure window screens in its new-home pet-proofing guidance.

Keep hazardous substances and plants inaccessible
Store medications, cleaners, laundry products, pesticides, and rodenticides in closed, inaccessible cabinets or containers. Check plants against a cat-specific toxic-plant reference; remove dangerous plants or place them somewhere the cat cannot reach. Also check for pest-control traps and other items left in storage or garden areas.
