Most Yorkie Shih Tzu mixes—often called Shorkies—can start with about 30 minutes of activity a day. PetMD gives that as a general daily target and also describes a range of 20–30 minutes, but it is guidance rather than a fixed prescription. Adjust the amount to your dog’s age, health, fitness, body condition and response to exercise, and ask your veterinarian for advice tailored to your dog.
How long should you walk a Shorkie?
Use about 30 minutes of daily activity as a starting point, not a requirement to complete one long walk. PetMD’s Shorkie care article, updated February 9, 2024 and reviewed by Veronica Higgs, DVM, gives both an estimate of around 30 minutes and a range of 20–30 minutes per day. For many dogs, splitting activity into shorter bouts and mixing a walk with play or training is more practical than expecting a single long outing. Watch how your dog handles the activity and adapt the routine rather than pushing through fatigue or discomfort.
What counts as exercise for a Shorkie?
Combine movement with opportunities to explore and use your dog’s mind. PetMD lists walking, fetch, obedience or skills training, and food puzzles as possible activities. A puzzle is optional enrichment, not a requirement.

Indoor games can contribute, but they do not offer exactly the same experience as a walk outdoors. VCA notes that Shih Tzus can meet many physical needs through indoor games while still benefiting mentally from outdoor walking and sniffing. Give your Shorkie chances to sniff and explore at a comfortable pace, alongside play and short training sessions. VCA’s Shih Tzu guidance.
Why parent-breed exercise advice differs
A Shorkie has Yorkshire Terrier and Shih Tzu ancestry, but there is no single crossbreed standard that sets its exercise needs. PetMD describes the Shorkie as a relatively new crossbreed not recognized by the American Kennel Club. Parent-breed recommendations offer context, not a formula for every mix.

These recommendations vary, so averaging the parent-breed figures would not establish a precise target for your individual Shorkie. Start with the mix-specific guidance and adjust with your veterinarian’s help.

Keep activity comfortable, especially in warm or humid weather. VCA notes that a Shih Tzu’s short muzzle can make the breed prone to overheating in warm weather. Avoid strenuous activity in heat and choose a gentler, cooler time or indoor play when conditions are uncomfortable.

PetMD says both parent breeds have an increased risk of tracheal collapse. In dogs with that condition, coughing may worsen with exercise, heat, humidity, excitement or stress. A cough— including a possible goose-honk sound—does not establish the cause; a veterinarian needs to assess it.
- Stop exercising and contact your veterinarian if your dog has repeated coughing, noisy or difficult breathing, unusual early fatigue, or seems unwell during ordinary activity.
- If airway concerns make pressure on the windpipe undesirable, PetMD says walking with a harness instead of a collar is typically recommended. A harness is conditional guidance, not treatment or a necessity for every Shorkie.
