A Yorkie Shih Tzu mix—often called a Shorkie, Shorkie Tzu, or Yorkie Tzu—is a small companion dog whose adult size, coat, appearance, and personality can vary. PetMD estimates full-grown Shorkies at 7–10 inches tall and 7–16 pounds, but there is no breed standard that guarantees those measurements or any particular temperament. Plan for regular coat care, daily companionship, reward-based training, and gentle handling.
What is a Yorkie Shih Tzu mix?
A Shorkie is a cross between a Yorkshire Terrier and a Shih Tzu. PetMD also lists “Shorkie Tzu” and “Yorkie Tzu” as names for the mix. The American Kennel Club does not recognize the cross as a breed, and no Shorkie standard defines its appearance or behavior. Parent-breed traits can offer clues, but they cannot predict exactly what an individual dog will look or act like. PetMD’s Shorkie guide was updated February 9, 2024.
What is a Yorkie Shih Tzu mix’s temperament?
Shih Tzus are described as loving and friendly, while Yorkshire Terriers are known for confidence and spiritedness. A Shorkie may show more of one parent’s tendencies than the other, and dogs within the same mix can differ. Socialization and training also shape how a dog responds to people and other pets.
Shorkies generally seek human company. A properly socialized dog may be outgoing with people and other animals, but friendliness, quietness, and a desire to cuddle are not guaranteed. Long periods alone can be stressful and may be associated with barking, house-soiling, or chewing. If your household is away for much of the day, consider how you will provide company and breaks.

How big does a Yorkie Shih Tzu mix get?
PetMD gives a typical full-grown estimate of 7–10 inches tall and 7–16 pounds. Treat that as a range, not a promise: without a mix-specific standard, an individual dog may not match those measurements. For context, the American Kennel Club lists the Shih Tzu parent breed at 9–10.5 inches and 9–16 pounds; parent figures do not determine a crossbreed’s adult size. The term “teacup” does not identify a standardized or predictable size category for this mix.
How do you groom a Yorkie Shih Tzu mix?
Brush according to the coat
For a long coat, brush or comb daily to help prevent tangles and mats. Coat texture can vary, and some coats mat more readily than others. A shorter haircut can make upkeep easier, though it does not remove the need to care for the skin and coat. The Yorkshire Terrier Club of America likewise notes variation in Yorkie coat texture and recommends daily brushing for that parent breed; its guidance is not a universal schedule for every Shorkie. Keep the face comfortable
Keep long hair around the face from falling into the eyes, and watch for signs of eye irritation. If you are unsure how to trim that area safely, ask a groomer or veterinarian for guidance.
Choose a bathing routine with veterinary advice
PetMD’s general Shorkie care guidance recommends bathing at least monthly, while warning that bathing too often can dry or irritate the skin. The right interval depends on the individual dog and its coat, so ask your veterinarian for a suitable schedule rather than treating monthly bathing as a rule for every Shorkie.

How much exercise, training, and attention does a Shorkie need?
PetMD recommends about 20–30 minutes of daily exercise, which can come from a walk or play. Use consistent, reward-based training and introduce the dog to a range of people, animals, and everyday experiences early and positively. A small body does not mean a dog needs no activity or guidance.
Because Shorkies are small, interactions with young children and larger pets should be supervised and gentle to reduce the chance of accidental injury. Teach children to handle the dog carefully and give it space to rest.

What health issues should Shorkie owners discuss with a veterinarian?
PetMD names patellar luxation, periodontal disease, portosystemic shunts, and tracheal collapse among conditions found in one or both parent breeds. The available guidance does not give Shorkie-specific prevalence rates, so these are possibilities to discuss—not conditions every Shorkie will develop or quantified risks for the mix.
Shih Tzu breed guidance provides additional context, not a diagnosis for a cross. The American Kennel Club notes heat intolerance associated with the Shih Tzu’s heavy coat and short face and lists eye concerns and patellar luxation in its breed profile. The United Kennel Club Shih Tzu standard calls for a muzzle of adequate length so that breathing and vision are not compromised. A Shorkie’s face and needs depend on the individual dog; ask a veterinarian about breathing, eye comfort, and heat precautions.

Dental care and puppy feeding
Small-dog dental health deserves regular attention. PetMD recommends brushing teeth at least three times a week and maintaining regular veterinary dental care. Shorkie puppies may need three or four meals a day to reduce hypoglycemia risk; ask a veterinarian to set a feeding schedule for the puppy in front of you.
Questions to ask before bringing one home
- Ask a breeder what health screening was performed on both parent dogs and what health history is known in their lines.
- Ask how the puppy has been socialized and what routines it is used to.
- Discuss any individual concerns—especially dental, eye, knee, or breathing issues—with a veterinarian.
Is a Yorkie Shih Tzu mix a good fit for your home?
A Shorkie may suit a home looking for a compact, social companion, provided the household can meet its care needs. Before deciding, weigh these practical considerations:
Quick Recap
- Coat upkeep: A long or mat-prone coat can require daily brushing; a shorter trim may reduce the burden.
- Company: This mix may be stressed by long stretches alone, so plan for regular companionship.
- Training and activity: Allow time for positive training, early socialization, and daily walks or play.
- Gentle handling: Protect a small dog from rough play and accidental injury around children or larger animals.
- Individual variation: Meet the dog and, where possible, learn about both parents; breed labels alone cannot promise an adult dog’s size, coat, or temperament.
