Shih Tzu size provides context, not a Shorkie range

What to ask about an individual Shorkie
There is no established Shorkie size distribution in the cited sources, so averaging parent heights or weights would create a false prediction. If you are considering a particular dog, ask for its current weight, age, growth history, and—if known—adult size of both parents. For a puppy, a breeder or rescue may be able to share parent measurements, but those still cannot guarantee the puppy’s adult size.
Temperament: parent tendencies are not a promise
Yorkshire Terrier

Shih Tzu

Assess the dog in front of you
A Shorkie may resemble one parent more than the other in behavior, and a breed label cannot tell you how an individual dog responds to handling, new people, other animals, or time alone. When adopting, observe the dog in ordinary situations and ask its caregiver about behavior history, socialization, and training. For a puppy, ask what the parents are like and how the puppy has been introduced to people and everyday experiences.

Coat and grooming: expect upkeep, not a guaranteed coat type
Both parent breeds can need daily brushing when their coats are kept long. AKC recommends a flexible-pin wire brush for a long Shih Tzu coat; choose a brush and routine that suit the actual Shorkie’s coat rather than assuming it will match either parent exactly. - For a long coat, brush daily to manage tangles and mats.
- AKC’s Yorkie profile suggests bathing about weekly, while its Shih Tzu profile suggests about every three or four weeks. These are parent-breed recommendations, not a universal Shorkie schedule; ask a veterinarian or groomer to tailor bathing to the dog’s coat and skin.
- Keep up with routine nail and ear care. AKC’s Shih Tzu guidance also calls for keeping hair away from the eyes; check the individual dog’s coat and follow professional advice.
- If you do not want to maintain a long coat at home, a professional groomer can help establish a manageable trim and schedule.
Neither the mix label nor a particular coat appearance establishes that a dog is hypoallergenic. Do not rely on a Shorkie being low-allergen or low-shedding; coat traits vary, and so do people’s allergy responses.

Exercise and training needs
AKC describes Shih Tzus as needing short daily walks and indoor play. For Yorkies, its guidance points to moderate walks, bursts of activity, and mental stimulation. A Shorkie may suit a routine that includes daily movement and play, but adjust duration and intensity to the dog’s age, fitness, and health rather than applying a fixed breed formula. Health questions to discuss with a veterinarian
AKC’s profiles mention patellar luxation and eye conditions among concerns for both parent breeds; the Shih Tzu profile also notes that the breed does not tolerate heat well. - Ask for available health records and information about both parents, including any eye or knee evaluations.
- For a Yorkie puppy, AKC advises limiting jumping height to help avoid luxating patella.
- Discuss the individual dog’s exercise, weight, eye care, and heat precautions with your veterinarian.

A Yorkie may be a better fit if…
- You prefer a recognized breed with a more established size and temperament profile.
- You are prepared for the grooming and activity needs of the individual Yorkie you meet.
A Shorkie may be a better fit if…
- You are comfortable with uncertainty in adult size, appearance, and temperament.
- You can evaluate the actual dog’s behavior, coat, health history, and care needs instead of relying on claims about what all Shorkies are like.
For either dog, choose based on the individual animal and your ability to meet its needs—not on a promise that a cross will combine only the most convenient traits of both breeds.
