The pigment can look like blood, but concrete mites and clover mites can leave red marks because of their natural color. A stain alone cannot identify the mite species.
Clean ordinary mite marks gently
First look for tiny live mites on or near the mark. Avoid wiping them dry or pressing hard: crushing them can leave more pigment. If the surface can be washed with water, choose the method that suits the size and location of the mark.
- For a small, localized mark: Dab or wipe gently with a damp rag or sponge and soapy water.
- For a broader area on a water-tolerant surface: Rinse with a garden hose, directing the water away from doors and areas where runoff could cause problems.
North Carolina State Extension recommends a garden hose or soapy water for patio mites, and University of Kentucky guidance cautions that careless wiping can crush mites and cause stains. If a mark does not come off
Do not jump straight to a strong cleaner or abrasive. The available extension guidance does not establish which stain removers are safe or effective on every type of stone, grout, paint, sealant, or composite decking. Check the surface manufacturer’s cleaning instructions first. On a durable surface, you can try a soft brush with light pressure, but this is a cautious practical option—not a method established as superior in the cited guidance. Test it on an inconspicuous spot, especially on a painted or sealed finish.

Make sure the red material is not bird droppings
Bird mites are associated with birds and their nests. They can appear white before feeding and red or black after feeding, but a red smear does not establish that bird mites are present. If you see continuing mite activity, a nearby nest may be relevant; do not disturb an occupied nest without checking local wildlife rules. University of Maryland Extension’s bird-mite guidance explains the connection to birds and nests.
If the material is bird droppings rather than a mite mark, change the cleanup method: lightly wet the droppings and keep them damp while removing them. Do not dry sweep or use a high-pressure washer, which can spread contaminated dust or particles. After removal, clean the surface with water and detergent. WorkSafe Queensland advises additional protection for major cleanups, and extensive accumulation may be a job for a specialist. These precautions concern droppings, especially accumulated material—not an ordinary mark from a few crushed mites. Why red marks can appear on patios
Some small mites gather on patios, concrete, masonry, and other outdoor surfaces. Alabama Cooperative Extension explains that crushed concrete mites can leave a mark in their natural color—not blood—and that large gatherings are generally short-lived. Clover mites can also leave red pigment when crushed and are not harmful to people or pets. Alabama Cooperative Extension’s fact sheet and University of Florida IFAS Extension’s clover-mite information describe these mites.
For patio mites, simple rinsing or soapy water is the supported cleanup approach; pesticides are not needed just to clean a stain. North Carolina State Extension notes that no pesticide is labeled for velvet mites, another name used for patio mites. A red mark by itself, however, cannot tell you which kind of mite—or other material—left it.
