Tiny red mites on a balcony are often clover mites or concrete (sidewalk) mites, but color alone cannot identify them. Confirmed clover mites do not bite or harm pets. For concrete mites, whether they bite pets is less certain: Alabama Cooperative Extension says it is unclear. If you can, remove the mites without crushing them; they can leave a red stain.
Which mites might be on your balcony?
Two plausible candidates are clover mites and concrete mites. Where they gather and what they look like can help narrow it down, but a close inspection—or a local expert’s assessment—may be needed for a confident identification.

Do not mistake every red mite for a harmless clover or concrete mite. Chiggers are a different group: their larvae are parasitic pests of people and animals, according to Alabama Cooperative Extension.
Are balcony mites harmful to dogs or cats?
If they are clover mites
Several university Extension sources say clover mites are plant feeders, not blood feeders, and do not bite or harm pets. The University of Kentucky puts it plainly: “Clover mites are not blood feeders and will not harm people or pets.” University of Kentucky Entomology Extension

If they are concrete mites
There is more uncertainty. Alabama Cooperative Extension says, “It is not clear if they bite people or pets.” An Oregon State Extension expert described likely concrete mites as common and “not known to bite,” which is reassuring but not a guarantee for an unidentified mite. If a pet has persistent itching, skin lesions or other symptoms, do not assume balcony mites caused them. Ask a veterinarian to assess the pet, particularly if symptoms continue or worsen.

How to remove them without making a stain
Crushing clover or concrete mites can leave a red or red-brown mark. The stain is mite pigment, not blood. If possible, lift or remove them without squashing them.
- On a hard outdoor balcony: Hose the surface with plain water. An Oregon State Extension response recommends this for concrete mites and notes that numbers often decrease on their own over time. Oregon State University Extension Service
- For a few indoors: Vacuum them or carefully wipe them up with a moist cloth. Maryland Extension calls vacuuming the quickest way to remove indoor clover mites; dispose of the vacuum bag so mites cannot escape back inside. University of Maryland Extension; University of Connecticut Extension
- If clover mites repeatedly enter the home: Seal cracks around window and door frames with caulk or weather stripping. A vegetation-free barrier may also help around a home foundation; UConn describes an 18–24 inch strip of sand or fine gravel. That foundation advice may not transfer directly to every balcony. Avoid making broad-spectrum pesticide the first response to unidentified mites. Maryland Extension recommends hosing hard surfaces with water and cautions that broad-acting pesticide residues can affect beneficial invertebrates. If a confirmed infestation warrants pesticide treatment, follow the product label and local expert advice. University of Maryland Extension

When to get help identifying them
Consider asking a local Extension office or pest professional to identify the mites if they are not confined to outdoor masonry, keep entering the home, or you need to choose a treatment. A hand lens can help you check for the long front legs of clover mites, but that feature is an identification aid, not proof of species. A photo-based guess should not substitute for veterinary advice when a pet has ongoing symptoms.
