The most reliable way to prevent a dog from getting lost is to combine secure barriers and supervision with leash control, gradual recall training, and two forms of current identification: a readable collar tag and a registered microchip. No single measure is foolproof, so use several layers together.

Secure doors, gates, and fences

Start by looking for every route your dog could use to leave home or the yard. Walk the boundary and check for gaps under fences, holes, loose boards, weak panels, climbable sections, and gates that do not latch. Keep gates closed and supervise your dog outdoors. Seattle Animal Shelter recommends securing gates and fencing and checking the home or play area for escape routes (Seattle Animal Shelter); Dogs Trust likewise advises checking fences and walls for holes, weakness, or damage (Dogs Trust).

Make doorways part of the plan, too. If visitors, deliveries, or a busy household make door-darting possible, have someone keep the dog away from the open door, or teach the dog to wait in a separate area until it is closed. Secure confinement should still allow the dog enough space and exercise; a barrier is not a substitute for meeting those needs.

Use a leash wherever there is no secure enclosure

Keep your dog on a leash in unenclosed places, even if the dog usually stays close. A distraction, sudden noise, or unfamiliar situation can prompt a dog to run before a recall works. Choose a collar or harness that fits securely and comfortably for your individual dog, and check its condition and fastenings before going out.

For dogs that may back out of their equipment, AKC describes a martingale collar as one option and gives a two-finger fit check for a well-fitted collar. Treat this as general editorial guidance, not a universal veterinary standard: the right fit and equipment depend on the dog. See AKC’s guidance on preventing escapes.

Train recall without treating it as a safety barrier

Teach your dog to come when called in a quiet, familiar place first. Reward the dog each time it returns, then gradually practice around more distractions and at greater distances. Use rewards the dog genuinely values so that coming back remains worthwhile.

Until recall is reliable, practice with a lead or long line attached to secure, well-fitting equipment. A long line is for supervised training; it is not permission to let a dog roam. Dogs Trust recommends lead or long-line practice while building recall (Dogs Trust). Even a well-trained dog should remain leashed outside secure enclosures.

Keep visible identification and microchip details current

Put current contact details on the collar

Use a readable ID tag with contact information that can reach you. Check it when your phone number or other details change. A tag can be read by a person who finds your dog without special equipment. The ASPCA says personalized ID tags are likely to be the fastest way to return a pet home because anyone who finds the animal can read them (ASPCA position statement on pet identification).

Maintain the microchip registry record

A microchip carries a permanent identification number that a shelter or veterinary clinic can scan. It is not GPS and does not show you the dog’s live location. For it to help reunite you, the number must be linked to current owner contact information in a registry. Update the record whenever your details change, and ask a veterinary professional whether the chip can be detected. AAHA notes that chips and scanners are not fail-safe, which is why a collar tag remains useful alongside a microchip (AAHA microchipping FAQs; see also the ASPCA guide to finding a lost pet).

Check the rules where you live

Licensing, leash, collar-tag, and microchipping requirements vary by jurisdiction. Hong Kong’s Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department describes local dog licensing and microchipping rules, while the UK government’s dog-welfare code sets out requirements for its jurisdiction. These are not universal rules; check the current guidance from your local authority for your location (Hong Kong AFCD; UK Defra).

What reunification figures can—and cannot—tell you

PDSA reported that 71% of pets reported missing in 2025 were later marked as reunited with their owners. That is a reported outcome for the population described on its page, not evidence that any one prevention measure caused the reunions (PDSA lost-pet prevention). The practical takeaway is to make escape less likely and make your dog easier to identify if it happens.
