Keep following up: a single call or online post may not reach everyone who could help.
What to do in the first few minutes
- Confirm the last-seen details. Ask someone at home to note when and where your dog was last seen while you begin searching.
- Search the home and immediate area. Check under furniture, porches, shrubs, vehicles, and other likely hiding spots. Look in enclosed places where a dog could be trapped, including garages, sheds, fenced yards, and dense landscaping.
- Ask neighbors to help. Ask what they saw and request permission before checking their property. Bring a recent photo so they can recognize your dog.
- Search calmly, including after dark. American Humane Society recommends familiar treats, a favorite toy or bedding, a calm, steady voice, and a flashlight for dark searches. It cautions, “Avoid shouting, which may scare anxious pets further away.” No search radius or lure works for every dog.
Who to contact and what to report
Contact the animal-control agency and shelters that take stray animals from the area where your dog disappeared. Also notify nearby veterinary offices, emergency animal hospitals, and rescue groups. Ask each organization how to file a lost-pet report and how often to follow up. Local reporting channels and shelter procedures vary by jurisdiction.
Give each service the same accurate information:
- Your dog’s name, breed or type, size, color, sex, and age
- Distinctive marks, collar or tag details, and microchip number if known
- The last-seen location and time
- A recent photo and your current contact details
Check shelters in person where possible, and call or visit again as reports change. Descriptions can be subjective, and staff or animals may change. Check facilities beyond the nearest one if local shelter boundaries mean they may receive strays from the area.
Check the microchip registry
Contact the chip registry promptly and verify that the phone number and address linked to your dog are current. As the ASPCA advises, “If you’ve moved or changed your phone number since registering your pet’s chip, be sure to submit an update as soon as possible.” A microchip can help identify your dog, but the registry needs a working way to reach you.

Make one clear lost-dog notice
Use the same photo, description, and contact details in every post and flyer so people can recognize and share the notice. Include:
- A large “LOST DOG” heading and recent, clear photo
- Breed or type, sex, color, size, age, and distinguishing marks
- Last-seen place and time
- One or more reliable phone numbers; the ASPCA recommends two if possible
Share the notice with local lost-pet groups, neighborhood networks, and community contacts. Refresh it when there is a new sighting or your contact route changes. Put up physical flyers only where permitted; ordinary digital or printed notices are sufficient.

Local animal-services pages may point to lost-pet resources such as Los Angeles County’s lost-and-found pet guidance. Check that a service covers your area before relying on it.
What to do if someone sees your dog
Tell the person not to run toward or grab your dog unexpectedly. A frightened dog may react unpredictably. If it is safe, a calm, slow approach may help; the City of Toronto advises, “Never attempt to grab them unexpectedly — they may be frightened and react unpredictably.” Ask the witness for the exact location, direction of travel, and time of the sighting.

If the dog is injured, near traffic, or cannot be approached safely, ask the witness to keep a safe distance and contact the local animal-control agency for instructions. Toronto uses 311 for local reports; elsewhere, use the local authority’s reporting channel rather than assuming that number applies.
Keep checking, then close the reports
Continue checking reports, shelter updates, and neighborhood posts for new sightings. If shelter staff report a possible match, visit promptly and bring any identification or ownership records they request. Once your dog is home, update or close lost reports and let people who shared the notice know.

After your dog is home
Check that your dog’s identification is current. The ASPCA recommends a collar ID tag with a current phone number, and you should also confirm that the microchip registry has your up-to-date contact information. An ID tag can help if your dog gets loose again, but it cannot locate a dog that is already missing.
