Animal-control staff usually check a found dog’s condition and identification, try to contact its owner, and arrange safe care while the owner-search process runs. What happens next—and how long the dog is held—depends on the local rules. For example, official guidance sets a seven-full-day hold in England and Wales, while Charlotte-Mecklenburg describes a 72-hour hold.
What animal control usually does with a found dog
- Assess the dog. Staff may note the dog’s condition, injuries or illness, behavior, and circumstances. England-and-Wales guidance specifically requires authorities to assess and record relevant welfare concerns when collecting a dog.
- Look for identification. They check a collar or tag and scan for a microchip. A current tag or chip record can help staff contact the owner.
- Search for the owner. Depending on local procedures, staff may compare the dog’s details with lost-pet reports or municipal records. Fairfax County, for example, says it checks lost-and-found reports and scans for a microchip as part of arranging a safe return.
- Arrange care during the local hold. The dog may stay at a shelter, or the agency may allow a finder to care for it temporarily. Fairfax County describes supporting finder care with supplies; Nashville directs finders who cannot keep a dog to bring it to the local agency.
- Return or make a disposition decision. If the owner is found, the agency explains its reclaim process and any applicable charges. If the dog is not claimed within the local period, local rules may allow adoption or transfer to a rescue.
How long animal control holds a lost dog
There is no single stray-hold period that applies everywhere. The location where the dog was found determines which agency and rules matter.

These are jurisdiction-specific examples, not rules that can be applied to other places. Contact the animal-control agency responsible for the place the dog was found and check its current found-animal listings.
If you think animal control has your dog
- Contact the agency and shelter serving the area where the dog disappeared. Ask whether the dog is in a stray hold or has been transferred elsewhere.
- Check found-animal listings often. Charlotte-Mecklenburg says its shelter listing updates hourly and advises checking daily and visiting in person at least once every three days. That schedule is specific to that agency.
- Give staff identifying details. Share a clear description, recent photo, distinguishing marks, collar or tag information, microchip number if available, and where and when the dog was last seen. Defra guidance lists owner contact details, a dog description, tag or microchip details, and last-seen information among the records authorities should collect when an owner reports a dog missing.
- Ask what you need to reclaim the dog. Confirm accepted proof of ownership, pickup arrangements, and any fees before you go; requirements and charges vary by location.
- Report suspected theft through the appropriate channel. England-and-Wales guidance directs stolen-dog reports to police. Elsewhere, follow local procedures and contact police if appropriate.
If you found the dog
- Put safety first. Do not approach a frightened or aggressive dog. Nashville’s guidance advises contacting animal control if the dog can be safely contained.
- If it is safe, check for a tag and contact the local agency. Ask where to have the dog scanned for a microchip and what the agency wants you to do next.
- Follow the agency’s care instructions. Some agencies require the dog to be brought in; others may coordinate temporary care with the finder. Do not assume that keeping the dog automatically makes it yours.
Can you keep a dog you found?
That depends on local law and the agency’s process. Under England-and-Wales guidance, a finder must first return an identified dog to its owner or bring it to the local authority before asking to keep it; the authority may assess whether the finder is suitable. The guidance also says that a suggested 28-day care period does not necessarily give the finder legal ownership. Those provisions should not be assumed to apply in other jurisdictions.

What reclaim fees might apply?
Fees depend on local rules. In England and Wales, Defra guidance describes a £25 statutory fee plus reasonable expenses for keeping the dog during the holding period; local policy governs how those charges are applied. Ask the responsible agency for its current fee and payment details before pickup.
