You can help some cats become more comfortable with a carrier through gradual, reward-based acclimation—but training cannot make an unsuitable backpack comfortable. Cats Protection does not recommend backpack-style carriers as a category: many do not give cats room to stand, lie down or turn around, and walking motion can feel unstable and stressful. Check the carrier’s fit and support first; if your cat cannot move comfortably or remains distressed, use a suitable alternative and ask your veterinarian for advice.
Are cat backpack carriers safe?
There is no single answer for every backpack or cat. Suitability depends on the carrier’s usable space, ventilation, temperature management, stability and security, as well as how your cat responds. Cats Protection warns that many backpack-style carriers lack enough room for normal movement and can feel unstable while walking. Its guidance is not an endorsement of any particular model.
Before training, check that your cat can stand up, turn around and lie down comfortably. The 2022 ISFM/AAFP guidelines also caution against a carrier so large that a cat slides or rolls around. Look for supportive construction, secure closures, ventilation and an opening that makes low-stress entry possible. Compare carriers on those welfare criteria rather than on appearance or pet-product marketing.
- Space and posture: Your cat should be able to stand, turn and lie down; the interior should support rather than toss the cat around.
- Airflow and temperature: Ventilation must remain unobstructed, including when bedding or a cover is used. Monitor conditions inside the carrier.
- Stability and security: The carrier should support your cat during movement and resist escape.
- Entry and cleaning: An opening that allows calm entry and a design that is easy to clean can make everyday use more manageable.
A conventional stable carrier may better meet these needs than a backpack, but the right choice is model- and cat-specific. If your cat cannot move comfortably in the backpack, choose another carrier instead of trying to train around the limitation.

How do I get my cat used to a backpack carrier?
Start with the carrier stationary, open and available in a quiet space. Let your cat approach or leave without being pushed. Move to the next step only while your cat remains comfortable; if your cat becomes unhappy, return to an easier stage and repeat it. Cats Protection and PDSA recommend gradual, reward-based carrier acclimation, and ISFM/AAFP guidelines support positive-reinforcement training for voluntary entry and comfortable travel.
- Make the carrier a familiar object. Place it open in a quiet area. For a very nervous cat, start with familiar bedding near the carrier and gradually move it closer over time.
- Invite voluntary investigation. Put familiar bedding inside. Offer a treat or familiar food in or near the opening, then reward calm exploration. Let your cat choose whether to enter.
- Build comfortable time inside. When your cat enters willingly, reward the choice. Allow the cat to spend short periods inside with the door open; do not block the exit.
- Introduce the closed door briefly. Once your cat is comfortable spending a few minutes inside, close the door for a short time, then open it. Increase this only when your cat remains calm.
- Practice being lifted. After your cat is calm inside with the door closed, lift the carrier briefly and set it down again so the sensation of being carried is introduced gradually.
- Add movement in tiny increments. Once stationary sessions and brief lifts are comfortable, try a few calm steps, then stop. Increase movement or duration gradually only if your cat remains relaxed. This is an application of gradual-training principles, not a tested schedule prescribed by the cited organizations.
Do not force your cat into the carrier or rush through stages to meet a deadline. There is no established universal timeline or guarantee that a cat will become comfortable riding in a backpack. Progress varies by cat; persistent distress is a reason to stop and reconsider the carrier and travel plan.

How long does it take to train a cat to ride in a carrier?
The available guidance does not establish a universal training duration. Some cats may move through early acclimation steps readily; others may need repeated, gradual practice. Let your cat’s comfort—not a fixed number of days or sessions—determine when to advance. If progress stalls or distress persists, pause and discuss travel concerns with your veterinarian.
What bedding or cover can make the ride more familiar?
Familiar bedding can add a recognizable scent and supportive resting surface. A towel or blanket may also give your cat a hiding opportunity or partially cover the carrier. The Feline Veterinary Medical Association’s 2025 statement recommends educating caregivers about carrier choice, acclimation and training, and providing an opportunity to hide, for example by covering the carrier with a towel or blanket.

Keep any cover clear of vents and watch airflow and temperature, especially in warm conditions. A cover should not make the carrier hot or poorly ventilated. The ISFM/AAFP guidelines specifically advise considering both airflow and temperature when using visual covers.
Can pheromone spray help?
Cats Protection and ISFM/AAFP describe synthetic feline pheromone spray or wiping as an optional preparation measure: apply it sparingly to the carrier, bedding or cover 15 minutes before travel or a veterinary visit. It may help make the carrier more familiar, but the guidance does not promise an effect for every cat. It does not replace appropriate equipment or gradual training.

How should I handle travel-day distress?
If your cat shows persistent or severe distress, do not keep forcing exposure to the backpack. Stop the session, return to an easier training step or use another suitable carrier, and consult your veterinarian about the distress and travel options.
The FelineVMA’s 2025 transportation statement discusses securing carriers on the floor behind the driver or passenger seat for motor-vehicle travel. That vehicle-specific advice does not establish that a backpack is suitable for walking, public transport or every other travel situation.
