Why Some Lizards Run on Two Legs—and When It’s Normal

Some lizards lift their front legs during a rapid burst because acceleration pitches the body upward. The behavior is normal in some species, but it is not universal.

Some lizards briefly run on their hind legs, usually during a rapid burst of acceleration. The leading explanation is mechanical: acceleration pitches the body upward, while a long tail shifts the lizard’s center of mass back toward its hips. This is a normal gait for some species, but it is not a behavior shared by all lizards—and the movement alone cannot tell you whether a particular pet is healthy.

Why do some lizards run on their hind legs?

When a lizard accelerates sharply, the force can tip its front end upward and lift its forelegs off the ground. The effect is similar to the front wheel lifting during a motorcycle wheelie. A long tail shifts the animal’s center of mass toward its hind legs, helping explain why the front can rise. When acceleration stops, the lizard’s forelegs can return to the ground.

That explanation does not mean every lizard consciously chooses to run on two legs. In a comparison of four Australian agamid species, researchers suggested that bipedal strides may result from acceleration. They also observed signs that some lizards actively attempted the gait, so the study did not rule out an additional benefit. The mechanics and interpretation are described in the 2008 study in the Journal of Experimental Biology and a 2012 review of reptile locomotion in The Herpetological Bulletin.

Does running on two legs make a lizard faster?

Not according to the comparison of the four Australian agamid species: bipedal strides were not faster than quadrupedal strides in any of them. Acceleration was higher during bipedal strides in three of the four species. The researchers therefore proposed that the gait may arise as a consequence of accelerating rather than serving as a way to reach greater speed.

ReptiKing Reptile Light Fixture, 5.5'' Standard Dome for Reptile Basking Bulb Light/Heat Lamp/Ceramic Heat Emitter, 5.5 Inch Light Dome
  • The Light Dome with heat resistant ceramic socket can accommodate either reptile heat lamp or reptile basking bulb and ceramic heat emitter (Max. 150W).
  • The Reptile Dome has an extra deep aluminum reflector dome that increases light, UVA output.
  • The light can be easily turned on and off by the On/Off switch, mounted on the extra long power cord (180 cm/6 ft).
  • This Reptile Light Fixture fits kinds of bulbs incl.; Daylight Basking Spot, Daytime/Night Time Heat Bulb, Natural Light, Reptile ceramic heat emitter.
  • UL Listed Ceramic Socket with E26 Interface. ReptiKing Reptile Dome is warranted to be free for replacement if any damage or deformation. No hesitate to contact us if you need any support.

The study also found that how often a species ran bipedally was associated with body size, a center of mass nearer the hip, and lower running endurance. These findings describe the species included in that comparison; they are not a rule for every kind of lizard.

Do lizards run on two legs to escape?

Escape is one documented setting, but two-legged running does not by itself prove that a lizard is frightened. In a field study of zebra-tailed lizards (Callisaurus draconoides), researchers observed bipedal strides during natural escape locomotion. Their paths were generally straight, and the location of nearby cover helped predict the initial direction of escape.

  • Safety and Ease of Use: Integrated with a lamp clamp and an on/off switch for easy operation. Provides safe performance, and the light clamp ensures secure placement on your pet's cage or terrarium.
  • Heavy Duty Design: Features heavy gauge painted aluminum which ensures durability and efficient performance in any terrarium or enclosure
  • Durable and Reliable: Constructed with a ceramic socket to maximize heat and ensure safe use. The light with clamp design ensures the clamp lights stay in place.

In that particular field study, about 30% of observed strides were bipedal, while only 11% exceeded 90% of the species’ maximal speed. Those figures apply to the study’s observations of zebra-tailed lizards, not to lizards generally. The findings are reported in the 1999 field study.

Is it normal for a pet lizard to run on two legs?

A brief hind-leg burst during acceleration can be normal for a species that uses this gait, and seeing it once does not by itself indicate illness or injury. Whether it is typical depends on the species and the circumstances; evidence about particular agamids or zebra-tailed lizards cannot establish what is usual for every pet lizard.
