Keep a Mudi engaged indoors by rotating easy scent searches, food-foraging games, short reward-based training, and calm settling practice. These activities make useful work for an intelligent herding dog, but they complement—not replace—daily movement and outdoor exploration. Start simply, supervise unfamiliar items, and adjust each game to your dog’s interest and abilities.
Why indoor enrichment matters for a Mudi
Mudis are Hungarian herding dogs known for their intelligence, activity, and versatility. The Mudi Club of America describes them as suited to active dog sports and says positive reinforcement and teamwork are effective approaches; its examples include agility, flyball, frisbee, herding, tracking, and obedience (Mudi Club of America; FAQ). NAMA also emphasizes daily activity and mental stimulation, including household obedience and trick training (About the Mudi).
PetMD gives a broad guideline of one to two hours per day for a Mudi’s exercise, mental stimulation, and training games. That is a breed-care recommendation covering activity across the day, not an indoor-only target or a precise requirement for every dog (PetMD’s Mudi care guide). Age, health, temperament, and the individual dog’s preferences all matter. Indoor games can add variety, but they do not provide every benefit of movement, social experience, and sniffing outdoors.
Indoor activities to rotate
There is no single best game for every Mudi. Rotate a few options and watch whether your dog stays interested, can solve the task, and remains comfortable. For a small home or apartment, many of these need little space.

1. Set up a scent search
- Use a portion of your dog’s normal kibble or a few counted treats. If your dog prefers toys, hide a familiar toy instead.
- Ask your dog to wait in another room, or have someone hold them while you place several pieces in easy, visible spots.
- Release your dog to search. Once the idea is clear, make hiding places gradually harder.
Starting with easy finds helps the dog understand the game before you increase the challenge. AAHA recommends gradually increasing hiding difficulty, and VCA also suggests hiding treats or toys at home (AAHA’s indoor enrichment guide; VCA’s enrichment and training guidance).
2. Turn part of a meal into foraging
Scatter some kibble on a clean towel, then loosely fold or roll it so your dog has to nose it open. Another option is to put food in a cardboard box with crumpled paper. AAHA also describes a muffin-tin game: place food in several cups and cover some with safe, familiar objects such as soft toys or paper. Keep the first version easy and supervise so your dog does not eat the paper or other materials. These household setups let you try foraging without buying a puzzle.

Change the task rather than repeating the same drill until interest fades; PetMD notes that an intelligent Mudi may lose interest with excessive repetition.
For its trick-training activity, AAHA suggests short sessions of five to ten minutes; treat that as guidance for that activity, not a fixed rule for every lesson (AAHA). The Mudi Club recommends positive reinforcement rather than heavy-handed correction (Mudi Club of America FAQ).

Begin somewhere easy, such as just around a doorway, and make the hiding place less obvious only after your dog understands the game. It combines listening, searching, and interaction without requiring a large room.
5. Add a low, safe movement challenge
For a little variety, weave around chairs or step over a low, stable object. AAHA suggests household obstacle courses but advises nonslip footing, low obstacles, and adjustments for age, size, mobility, and fitness. Avoid repeated jumping or anything that makes the dog slip or look uncomfortable. Athletic ability is not a reason to make indoor obstacles high-impact.

You can also rotate a few safe toys so they remain interesting rather than leaving every toy out all the time. Inspect toys regularly and remove damaged ones. VCA advises watching for frustration: if a dog walks away or bites or barks aggressively at a puzzle, make it easier or try a different activity (VCA).
7. Finish with a calm settle
After a game, invite your dog to rest on a familiar mat and reward quiet settling. If you are teaching the behavior, start nearby with short intervals and gradually build duration. VCA advises stopping and seeking help from a behaviorist if practice brings persistent barking, whining, or scratching to escape. Mat practice is an optional skill, not a requirement for every Mudi.

Keep games safe and appropriately challenging
- Count food toward the daily diet. Use regular meal food when practical. PetMD says treats should make up no more than 10% of daily calories; ask your veterinarian about an appropriate diet for your individual dog (PetMD).
- Choose and supervise equipment carefully. Pick toys that suit your dog’s size and chewing style. Supervise unfamiliar items and remove anything damaged or small enough to swallow. Household materials also need supervision if your dog may chew or eat them (AAHA).
- Check ingredients in food fillings. If using broth, AAHA cautions that it should not contain onion or garlic; check the ingredient list before offering it (AAHA).
- Make the puzzle easier if your dog gets stuck. An enrichment game should invite exploration, not become a source of frustration. VCA recommends considering breed, personality, and physical ability, then watching how the dog responds (VCA).
- Protect rest as well as activity. A busy dog does not need every spare moment filled with a task. Mix engaging games with quiet time and choose activities your dog can enjoy calmly.
How to build a simple indoor rotation
Keep the plan flexible rather than relying on one long puzzle or repeating the same game every day. For example, use a meal portion for a scent search one day, practice a new household cue another day, and offer a supervised foraging setup on a different day. Add hide-and-seek or a low movement challenge when your dog is comfortable with it. If interest drops, simplify the task or switch activities.
Individual Mudis differ in drive, sociability, and favorite activities; the Mudi Club recommends early socialization and recognizes variation in temperament (Mudi Club of America FAQ). Indoor enrichment is one piece of a broader routine that should also include appropriate daily movement and outdoor opportunities. NAMA notes that a Mudi without daily activity may devise its own games, including digging or other destructive behavior (NAMA).
