A screen top usually increases air exchange, which can make heat and humidity harder to retain; a more closed top can retain them better, but must not restrict ventilation. Neither design is best for every lizard.
Start with your lizard’s care requirements
Before choosing a lid, find reliable, species-specific guidance for your lizard’s temperature range, humidity, ventilation and UVB needs. The enclosure should provide a usable temperature gradient, not just one warm reading, and humidity should suit the species. UK government advisory standards likewise call for adequate ventilation, species-appropriate humidity and temperature gradients in reptile enclosures (UK government advisory standards).
Then assess the entire setup: room conditions, heating and lighting equipment, enclosure openings and the lid together. A mesh-covered top does not by itself guarantee adequate airflow, and lid material alone cannot establish that the habitat meets your lizard’s needs (Merck Veterinary Manual).
What changes with each lid type?

These are directional trade-offs, not measured guarantees. The cited sources do not provide controlled, directly comparable measurements of heat loss, humidity retention or airflow for matched screen-top and solid-top lizard enclosures.

When a screen top may suit the setup
A screen top may be appropriate when the species and room conditions allow the enclosure to maintain its required temperature and humidity with the ventilation provided. It is one established option for bearded dragons: UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine says a single adult can do well in a 75- or 120-gallon aquarium with a screen top, and describes moderate humidity as 40–60% relative humidity. Those figures are that guide’s bearded-dragon recommendations, not general targets for lizards (UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine). NC State Veterinary Hospital also describes a well-ventilated glass terrarium with a screen top for bearded dragons (NC State Veterinary Hospital).
For a species requiring higher humidity, a screen top may make it harder to hold the target. A manufacturer’s housing guidance similarly notes that maintaining high temperatures and humidity can be more difficult in an open-air habitat than in a solid or glass terrarium; treat that as a design consideration, not a comparative test (Zoo Med housing guidance).

When a more closed top may help—and what it cannot replace
A more closed top may help retain heat or humidity when the enclosure is losing them too quickly. But it is not a substitute for species-appropriate ventilation. Merck Veterinary Manual cautions: “Decreasing ventilation to maintain temperature and humidity is ill advised and frequently causes skin and respiratory disease” (Merck Veterinary Manual).
Do not seal or cover ventilation openings as a shortcut to raise humidity. The amount and placement of ventilation need to work with the species’ requirements and the enclosure’s other openings. Agriculture Victoria’s reptile welfare code calls for escape-proof indoor enclosures, securely screened ventilation holes and secured lids, and cautions against moisture accumulation and humidity extremes (Agriculture Victoria).

Check how the lid affects UVB
Choose the UVB lamp and its position with the actual barrier in mind. Merck says most transparent glass and plastic barriers filter UVB wavelengths. Mesh is not automatically UVB-transparent: transmission varies with its open area, including mesh aperture and wire thickness (New Zealand Herpetological Society). If your species needs UVB, use species-specific guidance to select a suitable lamp and fixture arrangement that does not place an unsuitable barrier between the light and the animal.

Do not decide that a lid is working from appearance or material alone. Measure temperature and humidity inside the enclosure, including the areas needed to assess its thermal gradient, and compare readings with reputable guidance for the species. UC Davis and NC State both list thermometers and a hygrometer among bearded-dragon care equipment (UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine; NC State Veterinary Hospital).

- If readings are outside the species’ target range, reassess the whole arrangement—heating, lighting, ventilation, room conditions and lid—rather than assuming a lid change alone will solve the problem.
- Keep ventilation adequate while adjusting conditions; do not block openings to retain heat or humidity.
- Secure the lid and screen any ventilation openings so the lizard cannot escape.
A practical decision
- Identify the species’ requirements. Confirm its temperature gradient, humidity, ventilation and UVB needs using a reliable species-specific care source.
- Consider the room and enclosure. Account for room conditions, heating and lighting equipment, and all ventilation openings—not just the lid.
- Choose the lid that can meet those needs. A screen top favors air exchange; a more closed top may aid retention, but still needs adequate ventilation.
- Check UVB through the actual barrier. Account for glass, plastic or mesh between the lamp and the animal.
- Measure and secure. Monitor temperature and humidity in the enclosure and make sure the lid and screened openings prevent escape.
