Brush your longhaired Dachshund regularly, work gently through the feathering, and check friction-prone spots for hidden snags. Brush out tangles before bathing; if a mat is tight, painful, or close to the skin, stop and ask a professional groomer or veterinarian for help rather than cutting it out.
How often should you brush a longhaired Dachshund?
Brush often enough to keep the coat free of tangles, adjusting the routine to your dog’s coat thickness and how quickly it knots. The American Kennel Club (AKC) says longhaired Dachshunds may need more frequent brushing depending on coat thickness, and its general guidance is that long-coated dogs often do best with daily brushing. Treat that as a practical starting point, not a fixed schedule for every dog.
Short, calm sessions are easier on your dog than waiting until tangles have built up. Check down to the skin gently, since a smooth-looking surface can hide knots underneath.
Which brushes and combs should you use?
Choose a tool that suits your dog’s coat and can move through the feathering without irritating the skin. AKC lists pin brushes and slicker brushes as options for longhaired dogs, and recommends a sturdy metal comb for finding and working through tangles. If you are unsure which brush is appropriate, ask a groomer, breeder, or veterinarian.

- Pin brush or gentle slicker brush: Use light strokes to work through the coat. Stop if your dog shows discomfort.
- Sturdy metal comb: Follow the brush with the comb to check for snags and small tangles you may have missed.
A useful check is whether the comb can pass through the coat comfortably after brushing. No single brush is best for every Dachshund; coat suitability and gentle handling matter more than the tool’s label.
Where do longhaired Dachshunds get tangles?
Pay particular attention to places where longer hair rubs against itself or the body. The breed’s feathering is found around the ears, forechest, underside, and behind the legs, while friction-prone spots include behind the ears, under the legs, and where the chest meets the front legs.

- Behind and around the ears
- Under the legs and where the front legs meet the chest
- Along the forechest and underside
- Behind the legs and through the longer feathering
Work methodically through these areas and check gently down to the skin. If your dog becomes uncomfortable, pause rather than pulling through a snag.
How should you detangle a small knot?
For a small, loose tangle, work patiently from its outside edge with your fingers, brush, or comb. Keep the hair from being pulled against the skin, and stop if the knot resists or causes discomfort. Do not forcefully pull a tangle apart.

Do not use household scissors to cut out a mat: skin can be caught in the knot and injured. If a mat is large, tight, painful, or close to the skin, leave it in place and contact a professional groomer or veterinarian. Groomers can use suitable tools for difficult detangling. Seek veterinary care if you notice irritated or wounded skin.
How do you bathe a longhaired Dachshund?
- Brush and detangle first. AKC advises brushing before bathing because mats can become more tangled when wet.
- Use warm water and dog-formulated shampoo. Choose a mild shampoo made for dogs rather than a human product.
- Rinse thoroughly. Work carefully through the coat so shampoo is rinsed away.
- Dry the coat comfortably. Do not leave the feathering wet and knotted.
There is no single bathing interval that suits every dog. Consider your Dachshund’s activity, coat, and skin, and ask a veterinarian if bathing seems to irritate the skin.

What other grooming should be part of the routine?
Nails
AKC breed guidance recommends trimming nails monthly. If you are unsure how to trim them safely, ask a groomer or veterinarian to show you.
Ears
Check the ears regularly. Clean only the visible outer portion; do not push cotton swabs or other objects into the ear canal. Redness, swelling, discharge, or a strong odor warrants veterinary assessment.
