1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose a water agitator for quiet surface ripples; choose a solar fountain for a visible spray. The fountain needs direct sun, enough water to keep its pump submerged, and routine cleaning. Neither option should be relied on to keep a birdbath ice-free in freezing weather.
What is the difference between an agitator and a solar fountain?
A birdbath water agitator gently disturbs the surface to make ripples. A solar fountain uses a pump to circulate water and, with a nozzle, produce a visible jet or spray. They create different effects, so the better choice depends on whether you want subtle movement or a fountain display.
Mel Hinton, in the San Diego Audubon Society guide “Build-your-own Solar Birdbath”, writes: “It is well known that birds are attracted to water, especially running water.” That is general guidance, not evidence that one of these products attracts more birds than the other. The cited product and guide claims do not establish that either option prevents mosquito breeding or reduces disease risk.
| Consideration | Water agitator | Solar fountain |
|---|---|---|
| Water effect | Surface ripples | Circulation and, with a nozzle, visible spray |
| Sun and power | A solar model works best in full sun; a battery model is an alternative for shaded sites. | The cited pump starts in direct sunlight; its panel can be positioned separately within the included cable reach. |
| Setup | The cited solar wiggler is placed in the bath and needs no wiring or plumbing, according to its maker. | Keep the pump submerged, the nozzle above the waterline, and the panel in sun. |
| Upkeep | No pump intake or fountain nozzle cleaning is specified for the cited agitator. | Monitor water level, refresh water, and clean the filter or intake. |
| Cold weather | Some wigglers may be used with a heated bath, but that does not mean they prevent freezing. | The cited pump maker advises taking its equipment out before freezing conditions and drying it for indoor storage. |
When is a water agitator the better choice?
Pick an agitator if you already have a birdbath and want low-splash ripples without a spray. The Miller Manufacturing Solar Water Wiggler is described by its maker as silent, solar-powered, and free of wiring or plumbing; Miller recommends full sunlight for best results. Its maker also lists a one-year warranty.

- RECOMMENDATIONS FOR USE: Make sure to use the solar fountain in clean water and under direct sunlight, a larger birdbath is recommended to prevent splashing out of the birdbath, The product does not work at night or when there is no direct sunlight.
If the bath sits in shade, a solar agitator may not be a reliable fit. Miller’s Aurora Water Wiggler is a battery-powered alternative. The manufacturer says it uses two D-cell batteries and may run for up to two months under normal conditions; actual runtime is not guaranteed.
When is a solar fountain the better choice?
Choose a fountain if you want a visible plume of moving water and can give its panel direct sun. The POPOSOAP 6.5W 80GPH Solar Birdbath Fountain Pump is one example. Its manufacturer says the panel can be positioned separately within the included cable reach, which can help when the basin itself is shaded, provided the panel can still receive sun.

These are manufacturer specifications, not independent category benchmarks. The pump must stay fully submerged while the nozzle remains above the waterline.
Plan for regular care
- Check the water level so the pump does not run without enough water; evaporation and frequent bird visits can lower it.
- Clean the filter or intake weekly as a baseline, or more often if leaves and other debris collect in the water, following the pump maker’s guidance.
- Refresh the bath water regularly. A San Diego Audubon Society solar-bath guide advises checking water every few days, especially after heavy bird use.
Will either option work in shade?
Do not assume a solar unit will run consistently without direct sun. Miller recommends full sunlight for its Solar Water Wiggler, and POPOSOAP says direct sunlight starts its fountain. Positioning a fountain panel separately can solve shade over the basin only if the panel itself can reach a sunny spot. For a shaded yard, consider a battery-powered agitator rather than expecting either solar device to work well without sun.

Keep the solar panel clean, leaves blocking the solar panel will cause it not to work. It does not store any energy and will rest at night to ensure a longer life.
Will moving water keep a birdbath from freezing?
No: do not treat an agitator or small solar fountain as a dependable freeze-prevention device. Miller says its solar and battery wigglers can be used with heated birdbaths; that is not a claim that a wiggler keeps water open on its own. For open water in freezing conditions, use equipment intended for that purpose, such as a heated birdbath or suitable de-icer.
For the cited POPOSOAP pump, the manufacturer warns that freezing water can cause irreversible damage to the pump body and battery. It recommends removing the pump and panel before temperatures fall below freezing, cleaning and drying them, and storing them indoors in a cool, dry place. Do not interpret its light-frost cover guidance as support for leaving the pump in long-term freezing conditions.
