Make a birdbath safe by keeping its water shallow, its footing secure, and its surroundings open enough for birds to spot danger and escape. Replace the water frequently and scrub away algae and debris. In winter, a heated bath is optional; if you use a heater, connect it to a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI)-protected outlet. Never add antifreeze or glycerin.

Choose a shallow basin with secure footing

Birds need to stand and drink without being forced into deep water. Cornell Lab recommends water no deeper than 1 inch at the edges and 2 inches at the center. A gently sloped basin makes it easier for birds to enter and leave.

Add a few stones or a sturdy branch if the basin lacks good places to perch. These give birds secure spots to stand and drink without getting fully wet. Keep any added material stable so it cannot roll or shift underfoot. Cornell Lab’s bird-friendly backyard guidance covers shallow water and safe access.

Place the bath where birds can see danger

Bathing leaves birds vulnerable, so give them a clear view of the area around the basin and room to take off. Nearby branches can offer a place to preen after bathing, but avoid surrounding the bath with dense cover where a predator could hide.

If cats roam nearby, leave open ground between a ground-level bath and thick vegetation. Place the bath close to, but not directly beneath, woody brush and feeders; this helps limit falling debris while keeping the bath accessible to birds.

Keep the water fresh and the basin clean

Droppings, dirty feathers, algae, and stagnant water make a bath less suitable for birds. Cornell Lab advises changing the water at least every three days, more often in warm weather. Audubon recommends replacing it every other day. In hot weather, changing it daily or every other day is a practical approach; in cooler weather, refresh it at least every few days. Remove visible algae and debris promptly.

Spring and migration

Before regular use resumes, remove debris and start with a clean basin. Keep up with water changes and scrubbing. More birds may gather at baths during migration, making consistent maintenance especially useful.

Winter

Birds can often find water in snow or dripping icicles, so keeping a bath unfrozen is not essential. One simple option is a shallow bowl that you refresh and bring indoors when it freezes. Winter air may make refills necessary more often than expected.

Ceramic baths can crack in freezing weather. If you want an unfrozen bath, use a heater designed for birdbaths and follow its instructions; connect it to a GFCI-protected circuit. A plastic bath with a built-in heater or a compatible heater added to a summer bath are options Audubon describes, but check the heater maker’s instructions for the specific setup. Audubon’s winter birdbath advice discusses materials and heating. Never put antifreeze or glycerin in the water.

Choose a winter approach that fits your setup

Approach What it involves Best fit
Unheated bath Refresh the water by hand and bring a shallow bowl indoors when it freezes. You can check and refill the bath regularly, or local freezing is intermittent.
Heated bath Use a birdbath heater according to its instructions and connect it to a GFCI-protected circuit. You want water to remain unfrozen and have a suitable protected outlet and compatible bath.

Consider how often you can refill or swap water, whether the bath material tolerates freezing, and whether a GFCI-protected outlet is accessible. Heating is a convenience, not a requirement for birds to find winter water.

Respond quickly to algae or dirty water

If you spot algae, droppings, or other debris, empty the bath, rinse and scrub it, then refill it with fresh water. Do not wait for the next routine change if the water has become visibly dirty. As Audubon’s Geoffrey LeBaron puts it, “If you don’t take good care of your birdbath, either it will dry out completely, which is no use for birds, or it’ll get fetid.”
