Pig ears are not a risk-free chew, and VCA does not recommend them: they can be very fatty, may be chemically treated or contaminated, and can cause intestinal blockage. The FDA has documented a past Salmonella outbreak linked to pig-ear treats, though that specific outbreak was declared over in 2019. If you choose to offer one, supervise your dog and follow careful hygiene practices.

Are pig ears safe for dogs?

Not reliably enough to call them safe for every dog. VCA advises against pigs’ ears, citing their high fat content, possible chemical treatment, harmful bacteria, and risk of intestinal blockage. Cornell notes that dried pig-ear treats are typically not cooked. These concerns do not mean every pig ear is contaminated or will make a dog ill, but they do make the chew a choice with meaningful risks.

Dogs can also carry and shed Salmonella without looking sick. That creates a household exposure risk, particularly when people handle the treat or the dog licks them or surfaces.

What benefits do pig ears offer?

A pig ear is an edible chew. Chewing in general can occupy dogs and exercise their jaws, as the American Kennel Club (AKC) explains, but the reviewed sources do not establish a special nutritional, dental, or medical benefit for pig ears. Do not assume they clean teeth or provide a health benefit simply because a dog chews one.

What can go wrong when dogs eat pig ears?

Salmonella and household exposure

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) investigated human Salmonella infections linked to exposure to pig-ear pet treats. During that 2019 outbreak, the FDA recorded 154 human infections across 34 states and 35 hospitalizations. Some outbreak strains were multidrug-resistant, and some implicated treats were traced to Argentina, Brazil, and Colombia. These are historical outbreak figures, not a current case count or an estimate of the risk from every product sold today.

The FDA says the CDC declared that outbreak over on October 30, 2019. Its consumer guidance no longer tells everyone to avoid all pig-ear treats; instead, it advises caution and hygiene for people who choose to feed them. An earlier AKC article reflected outbreak-era advice to stop feeding pig ears, but that advice predates the FDA’s later update.

Illness in dogs

Possible signs of Salmonella illness in pets include vomiting, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), fever, loss of appetite, and reduced activity, according to the FDA. Contact a veterinarian if your dog develops these symptoms after exposure. People who develop possible Salmonella symptoms should contact a health care provider.

Choking or intestinal blockage

A dog that bites off and swallows large pieces can choke or develop an obstruction. VCA specifically identifies intestinal blockage as a concern with pigs’ ears; AKC also warns more generally that swallowed chunks of edible chews can cause choking or obstruction.

High fat and coatings

VCA describes pigs’ ears as very fatty, while AKC notes that coatings may upset a dog’s stomach. A chew that is poorly suited to a dog’s diet or digestion can be a problem even without bacterial contamination.

How often can I give my dog a pig ear?

No pig-ear-specific feeding frequency is established in the reviewed sources. Do not treat a daily, weekly, or other interval as evidence-based advice. VCA recommends that treats overall make up no more than 5% of a pet’s daily calories, but that general ceiling is not a pig-ear allowance; VCA separately advises against pigs’ ears. Ask your veterinarian about treat choices if your dog has individual medical or dietary needs.

If you choose to offer a pig ear

The FDA’s precautions reduce opportunities for household exposure; they do not eliminate the risks of contamination, choking, or blockage. The agency advises:

What are safer alternatives to pig ears?

No chew is safe for every dog. AKC recommends choosing based on the dog’s size, age, and chewing style. Consider the chew’s size, hardness, durability, and ingredients, and whether your dog tends to swallow pieces. A chew that is too hard can damage teeth; a piece your dog can swallow can create choking or obstruction risks.

VCA suggests lower-calorie treats and dental chews as options, and notes that appropriately prepared carrots and apples can be dental-friendly snacks. AKC also discusses other animal-part chews and manufactured dental bones, but these should be assessed for their own risks rather than presumed safe. Ask your veterinarian which options fit your dog’s teeth, diet, and chewing habits.
