The island is often called “Monkey Island,” but the name can create the wrong impression: this is not a public wildlife park, a monkey sanctuary, or an unmanaged native population. It is a restricted island containing a managed, free-ranging breeding colony connected to biomedical research.
Where is South Carolina’s Monkey Island?
Morgan Island lies off South Carolina’s coast in Beaufort County. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources acquired the island in 2002, subject to an existing lease associated with the rhesus-macaque breeding operation.

The monkeys are allowed to move freely across parts of the island, including forest, marsh, and shoreline areas. That freedom is why they are often described as “wild” or “free-ranging.” However, they are not native South Carolina wildlife and do not represent a self-sustaining population that appeared naturally on the island.
How many monkeys live there?
The commonly used figure is about 3,000 rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta). It is best treated as an approximate population size rather than an exact, current census. Federal and scientific descriptions have put the colony at different points, including approximately 2,800 to 3,000 and roughly 3,700 animals, as summarized in a federal Government Accountability Office record and a federal contract listing.

Why were monkeys brought to Morgan Island?
In 1979, more than 1,400 rhesus monkeys were moved from the Caribbean Primate Research Center in Puerto Rico to Morgan Island. The study of the Morgan Island colony’s environmental impacts describes the relocation as part of a U.S. effort to establish domestic breeding colonies after India restricted exports of rhesus monkeys used in research.
The animals came from the Puerto Rican colony on Cayo Santiago. They were not captured from South Carolina’s forests or marshes. Morgan Island was selected as a location where a large colony could breed and move around in a relatively natural setting while remaining under institutional management.
Are the monkeys truly wild?
“Wild” is a useful shorthand for the way the monkeys live, but it is not the whole story. They are free-ranging: they are not kept in individual cages or confined to a conventional zoo enclosure. At the same time, the colony is managed for biomedical-research purposes.
Federal records describe the monkeys as freely breeding and roaming while receiving food and veterinary care. Animals have also been monitored and periodically transported to research facilities. That makes Morgan Island different from both a wild primate habitat and a typical captive exhibit.

A more precise description is: Morgan Island contains a managed, free-ranging colony of non-native rhesus macaques used in a biomedical-research breeding program.
That distinction matters for anyone thinking about visiting, photographing, feeding, or approaching the animals. The monkeys are not community pets, and they should not be treated like tame animals.
What happens on the island now?
Morgan Island remains associated with a federal macaque-breeding program. A USAspending record identifies Alpha Genesis, Inc. as the recipient of a National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases contract titled “NIAID SPF Macaque Breeding Colonies.” The record lists an award period from September 30, 2025, through September 29, 2026, and a current award amount of $8,408,640.
The contract record helps explain why the island should not be described simply as a place where monkeys happen to live. The colony is part of an ongoing, organized operation involving breeding, animal care, monitoring, and research-animal production.

Can people visit Monkey Island?
Morgan Island is not a standard tourist destination. Public reporting describes viewing the monkeys from boats offshore as the usual option; ordinary visitors generally cannot land on the island or walk among the macaques.
Even from the water, a sighting is not guaranteed. The animals may be hidden in forest or marsh vegetation rather than gathered along the shoreline. A boat trip should therefore be treated as wildlife viewing from a distance, not as a guaranteed animal encounter.
Visitors should not:
- Attempt to land on the island without explicit authorization.
- Approach, call to, or feed the monkeys.
- Assume that a free-ranging macaque is tame or safe to handle.
- Try to photograph the animals at close range.
Those rules are especially important because rhesus macaques are strong, social primates with complex group behavior. The fact that they live outdoors does not make them suitable for contact with tourists or household pets.
The 2024 monkey escape happened somewhere else
One important detail is frequently mixed up with the Morgan Island story. In November 2024, 43 rhesus macaques escaped from an Alpha Genesis facility in Yemassee on the South Carolina mainland, not from Morgan Island, according to CBS News.

- Factory sealed DVD
CBS News reported that the last of those 43 monkeys was recaptured on January 24, 2025. Alpha Genesis’s mainland facilities and the Morgan Island colony are related through the broader macaque-research operation, but they are different locations. Calling the Yemassee incident an escape from “Monkey Island” gives the wrong impression about what happened.

Several popular descriptions of Morgan Island are technically misleading:
| Common description | Better wording |
|---|---|
| “An island with 3,000 wild monkeys” | An island with about 3,000 managed, free-ranging rhesus macaques |
| “South Carolina’s native monkey population” | A non-native colony established with monkeys moved from Puerto Rico |
| “A monkey sanctuary open to visitors” | A restricted research-breeding site that may be viewed from offshore boats |
| “The place where the 43 escaped monkeys got out” | The escape occurred at a mainland Alpha Genesis facility in Yemassee |
Morgan Island is unusual precisely because it sits between categories. The macaques live in an open island environment and breed freely, yet people manage the colony and its purpose is tied to research. “About 3,000 wild monkeys” makes a striking headline, but “managed, free-ranging rhesus macaques” is the more accurate description.

Are the monkeys on Morgan Island native wild animals?
No. They are rhesus macaques descended from more than 1,400 animals moved from a research colony in Puerto Rico to Morgan Island in 1979.
Can tourists visit or walk around Morgan Island?
Morgan Island is restricted and is not a normal tourist attraction. People generally view the monkeys from boats offshore where permitted; visitors should not land, approach, or feed them.
Did the 43 monkeys that escaped in 2024 come from Morgan Island?
No. The 43 rhesus macaques escaped from an Alpha Genesis facility in Yemassee on the South Carolina mainland. CBS News reported the final escapee recaptured on January 24, 2025.
The Bottom Line
Morgan Island really does contain about 3,000 rhesus macaques, but calling them simply “wild monkeys” leaves out the central fact. They are non-native, free-ranging animals in a managed biomedical-research breeding colony. The island is restricted, not a petting attraction, and the 2024 escape occurred at a separate mainland facility in Yemassee.
