Before a veterinary appointment, confirm the clinic’s instructions, gather your pet’s records and medication details, and write down questions and symptom notes. A little practice with transport and gentle handling can make the visit easier. Tell the clinic ahead of time if your pet is fearful or difficult to handle, and follow its advice about food, samples, and medications.
Before the appointment: prepare the information your vet needs
Useful history can help the veterinary team understand changes that may not be obvious during a brief exam. If you are switching clinics or seeing a specialist, ask your previous clinic to send records ahead of time when possible.
- Medical history: Bring or arrange transfer of diagnoses, treatments, test results, prescriptions, and procedure history.
- Medication details: List or photograph current and recent prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, supplements, and parasite preventives. Include each dose, how often it is given, and when it was last given.
- Food and treats: Note your pet’s food and treat types or brands, and ask whether food should be withheld for this visit.
- Questions and observations: Write down your questions and when a symptom began, what has changed, possible triggers, and what seems to help. If an unusual movement or behavior is safe to record at home, take a short video in case it does not happen at the clinic.
For more on what to bring, see Zoetis Petcare’s appointment checklist and Oregon Humane’s preparation guidance.
Confirm the clinic’s instructions
Call or message the clinic before the visit to confirm arrival logistics and ask whether this appointment has special instructions for food, medications, samples, or transport. Fasting is not a universal rule: whether it is needed depends on the planned exam, test, or procedure. AAHA notes that skipping breakfast may be considered conditionally for food-motivated pets, but the clinic should tell you what is appropriate for your pet and appointment. Do not change a medication schedule or withhold food based on general advice alone.

Make transport and handling more familiar
Start preparation in advance rather than trying to teach a new routine on appointment day. Keep practice brief, pair it with rewards when appropriate, and stop or make the next attempt easier if your pet becomes uncomfortable. AAHA’s stress-free visit guidance describes gradual positive associations with carriers, cars, and handling.

For cats: make the carrier part of the home
Leave the carrier open in an ordinary, accessible place instead of bringing it out only when it is time to leave. Add familiar bedding or scents, and offer meals, treats, or enrichment inside so your cat can choose to explore it. On the way to the clinic, keep your cat secured in the carrier. A light towel over it may reduce visual stimulation for some cats; let the veterinary team know what handling and carrier approach your cat tolerates best. AAHA offers additional cat and dog visit preparation advice.
For dogs: practice gentle handling and pleasant car trips
In short, positive sessions, practice gentle contact with areas the veterinary team may need to examine, such as paws, ears, mouth, and body. Pair contact with rewards if appropriate, and let your dog opt out. Cornell’s dog visit guidance advises against forcing touch: let your dog walk away if uncomfortable, then work in smaller steps. Short, pleasant car rides that do not always end at the clinic can also help make travel less unusual.

Cornell also describes a lick mat or hollow rubber treat dispenser as optional distractions for dogs, if food is permitted and the clinic agrees.
Plan for fear or difficult handling
Tell the clinic before you arrive if your pet has a history of fear, reactivity, or difficulty being handled. Describe what triggers distress and what has helped in the past. Ask whether a quieter arrival, waiting outside or in the car, a low-stress handling approach, or a happy visit is suitable for your pet and the circumstances.

Freezing, vocalizing, trying to escape, or becoming aggressive are reasons to alert the veterinary team and ask for a plan. Do not give a medicine or supplement for the visit unless the veterinarian directs its use.
