If a mat is tight, close to the skin, widespread, or painful, stop and contact a professional groomer rather than pulling or cutting at it.
Why a Berner’s coat needs brushing through both layers
Bernese Mountain Dogs have a long double coat: a water-resistant outer coat over a thick undercoat. Brushing only what you can see on top can leave loose undercoat trapped underneath, where tangles can develop. The goal is to reach both layers gently, not to scrape or pull at the skin.
How often to brush
The American Kennel Club (AKC) recommends weekly brushing for Berners and daily brushing during shedding seasons. Its breed guidance describes heavier shedding periods twice a year; that is general guidance, not a measured estimate for every dog. Your dog’s coat, climate, and current shedding affect how much brushing is needed, so check more often when you notice extra loose hair or tangles.
Tools for a long double coat

A practical brushing routine
- Set a regular time. Brush weekly as a baseline. During seasonal shedding, check and brush daily as needed.
- Work in manageable sections. Use steady, gentle strokes through the visible coat and into the undercoat. Watch your dog’s response and pause if they seem uncomfortable.
- Check with a comb. After brushing, pass a wide-tooth steel comb through the coat. If it catches, stop and assess the tangle instead of yanking.
- Use a rake only for loose undercoat. During heavier shedding, an appropriately sized undercoat rake can help lift loose undercoat. It is not a substitute for careful work on a mat.
- Inspect friction and debris-prone areas. Check where the front legs meet the chest, as well as areas that have stayed damp or collected debris.
What to do when you find a mat
For an occasional loose tangle, work patiently from its outer edge toward the body and stop if your dog shows discomfort. Gentle handling and appropriate tools matter, but there is no universally safe at-home method for every mat. Never pull hard against the skin or cut blindly into a mat; the skin can be difficult to see beneath dense fur.
Arrange professional grooming help if a mat is tight, extensive, close to the skin, painful, or does not yield to gentle combing. A groomer can assess whether it can be worked out safely or needs clipping. The AKC notes that shaving may be necessary as a last resort when severe matting cannot be safely brushed out.

Why shaving is not routine mat prevention
Do not shave a Bernese Mountain Dog as a standard summer-cooling measure or routine way to prevent mats. The AKC explains that a double coat serves protective and insulating roles and grooming experts generally advise against shaving it. Clipping may be considered by a professional for severe matting that cannot be safely brushed out; it is not a guaranteed solution for every mat or a substitute for regular brushing.
