How to Groom a Bernese Mountain Dog at Home Without Shaving Its Double Coat

A practical home routine for brushing a Bernese Mountain Dog’s double coat, bathing as needed, and caring for paws, nails, and ears without routine shaving.

You can keep a Bernese Mountain Dog comfortable and tidy at home without shaving its coat: brush through the dense fur regularly, work out loose undercoat, bathe only when needed, and keep up with nails, ears, and paws. A Berner’s long, dense double coat is meant to stay natural; shaving is not a routine fix for shedding or summer heat.

How much grooming does a Bernese Mountain Dog require?

Bernese Mountain Dogs have a flat, water-resistant topcoat over a thick undercoat. Both layers are part of the coat, so the aim is to remove loose hair and prevent tangles while leaving the protective coat intact. The American Kennel Club (AKC) recommends combing double-coated dogs two to three times a week to help prevent mats; PetMD says a Berner’s thick coat may need brushing several times weekly, if not every day. Adjust to your dog’s coat, activity, and shedding, checking more often when loose hair builds up. These are practical recommendations, not a measured guarantee of reduced shedding.

The Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America’s breed standard says, “The Bernese Mountain Dog is shown in natural coat and undue trimming is to be discouraged.” The standard’s natural-coat guidance supports routine brushing and limited tidying rather than a haircut. Read the breed standard.

How to brush the coat without irritating the skin

  1. Make handling calm and brief. Let your dog get used to the brush and to having its coat, paws, and ears touched. Reward relaxed behavior and pause if your dog becomes uncomfortable.
  2. Work in small sections. Use gentle strokes that reach through the fur toward the skin, rather than brushing only the surface. Check for tangles and look for burrs, cuts, scrapes, or unusual skin changes as you go.
  3. Choose a tool you can control. A grooming rake or quality steel comb can help lift loose undercoat. Use a slicker brush in denser areas and move gently. The AKC names these tools for double-coated dogs; no particular brand or bladed tool is required by the guidance. See the AKC’s double-coat guidance.
  4. Check mat-prone spots. Pay particular attention behind the ears and under the legs. Comb the head carefully, where tangles can form, without pulling at the skin.
  5. Stop if a mat is tight or painful. Do not force a brush through a painful mat or try to use clippers without the skill to work safely close to the skin. Extensive matting or handling that is too stressful calls for a professional groomer or veterinarian.

Should you shave a Bernese Mountain Dog in summer?

No—not as a routine way to manage heat, shedding, or coat length. The two coat layers work together, and shaving removes coat rather than simply clearing loose undercoat. The AKC advises against shaving double-coated dogs for ordinary heat management. As Teri Becker DiMarino, president of the California Professional Pet Groomers Association, explains in the AKC article, “Shaving doesn’t do anything to cool dogs off because a dog’s cooling system is different than ours.”

Dog Brushes for Grooming Large Dogs, Undercoat Dog Rake Long Hair Pet Comb Pet Grooming Brush with Anti-Slip Handle, Steel Comb for Golden Retriever Husky German Shepherd
  • ROUNDED PIN : The long tooth undercoat rake brush has smooth rounded pins that make it easier for pets to accept grooming. The 0.94 foot long steel teeth of the rake penetrate deep into the dog's hair to remove loose fur and remove all mats, tangles and knots. Long tooth undercoat dog rake brush Not suitable for cats, puppies or short-haired pets.
  • NON-SLIP HANDLE : This large dog grooming comb has an ergonomic non-slip handle, and a rubber non-slip pad allows you to optimally control the pet's brushing tool, so you can brush your pet's long or short hair easily.
  • REDUCE FLOATING HAIR : Got to brush regularly for 5 minutes to easily remove dead hair so it doesn't fly off. Your pet can reduce shedding by up to 90%. Your sofas, carpets and sweaters will be hair-free!
  • EASY TO USE : Placing the large brush on the skin is important because the massaging action helps to relax and remove dandruff. First, gently trim the back and tail, taking care not to hurt the eyes or ears. Make the brush go down the dog's neck. If your dog has long hair (feathers) on the back of the legs, brush it through as it tends to get tangled. Finally, brush lightly over the soft belly to remove any remaining emanations.
  • STRONG & STURDY : This pet shedding grooming brush is made of durable and rust-resistant stainless steel, so getting it wet won't break it.

Instead, provide shade and fresh water and limit exercise during the hottest part of the day. A groomer may need to clip an area in exceptional cases where severe matting cannot safely be brushed out; that is different from shaving the coat for summer. AKC guidance on double-coated dogs.

How to bathe a Berner at home

There is no single bath interval that suits every Bernese Mountain Dog. The AKC cautions that bathing too frequently can strip natural oils; PetMD gives a two-to-four-week interval, while the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of Western Australia says a bath is needed when the dog has an odor. Consider the dog’s coat and skin condition, how dirty it gets, and your veterinarian’s advice rather than treating any interval as universal. 1. Work through tangles first. Mats can become harder to manage when wet, so gently comb the coat before bathing. Leave painful or tight mats to a professional.
  2. Wet the coat thoroughly. Use water at a comfortable temperature and a mild shampoo formulated for dogs. Do not assume human shampoo is interchangeable.
  3. Rinse completely. Work shampoo through the coat gently, then rinse until no residue remains.
  4. Dry with comfort in mind. Towel-dry and use an appropriate dryer only if your dog tolerates it. Keep the process calm; seek professional bathing and drying if the coat, facilities, or your dog’s handling needs make home drying impractical.

The AKC’s at-home grooming guide covers brushing, bathing, and nail care.

Nails, paws, ears, and skin checks

Nails and paws

Trim gradually, taking only the hooked tip beyond the quick—the sensitive part inside the nail. Keep styptic powder nearby in case you nick a nail. If trimming is difficult or upsetting for your dog, a groomer or veterinarian can do it. Check the paw pads for debris or injury, and be cautious with hair between the toes; a professional may be needed for that trim.

Ears

After a bath or swim, dry the ears. Clean only the visible outer portion; do not insert tools or cotton swabs deep into the ear canal. Redness, swelling, discharge, or an unusual odor warrants veterinary attention rather than home cleaning.

Skin and coat

As you brush, check for cuts, scrapes, irritation, or other changes. Ask a veterinarian about abnormal skin, injuries, or signs of infection; brushing is not a substitute for diagnosis or treatment.

When to call a groomer or veterinarian

  • A mat is tight, extensive, painful, or cannot be safely brushed out.
  • Your dog resists handling enough that brushing, bathing, or nail care risks injury or significant distress.
  • You are unsure how to trim nails or manage hair between the toes safely.
  • You notice an injury, abnormal skin, ear redness or swelling, discharge, or odor.

A professional groomer can help with difficult mats, bathing and drying, or nail care. Consult a veterinarian when the concern involves pain, injury, skin changes, or possible infection. The AKC notes that shaving an area can be necessary in exceptional severe matting cases when brushing is not safe; it is not the ordinary grooming plan for a Berner.
