Usually, no. A Bernese Mountain Dog’s natural double coat should not be shaved to reduce shedding or help the dog stay cool in summer. Brush the coat regularly and manage heat with shade, water, and cooler-time exercise. Severe mats or a coat that stays damp against the skin are different: ask a professional groomer about targeted clipping, and consult a veterinarian about skin problems.
Why a Bernese Mountain Dog’s coat should usually be left natural
The Bernese has a thick, moderately long double coat: a longer outer coat lies over a soft, dense undercoat. The outer coat is also called the guard coat. The American Kennel Club standard, hosted by the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America, describes a natural coat and says “undue trimming is to be discouraged.” The club page says the latest standard version was approved February 10, 1990. Read the breed standard.
A double coat provides insulation and helps protect the skin. Shaving it is not a dependable way to cool a dog, and it does not stop shedding. According to AKC Chief Veterinary Officer Dr. Jerry Klein, shaving can remove insulation and protection from sunburn, and may lead to improper hair growth or follicle damage. If the undercoat grows back faster than the guard hairs, the coat may return with a changed texture or color, or look patchy. These are possible risks, not guaranteed outcomes. What to do instead of shaving
Brush through the coat regularly
Use a rake comb and slicker brush suited to the dog’s coat. Work gently in the direction the hair lies, reaching through the coat rather than brushing only its surface. Pay careful attention to the undercoat, and do not pull forcefully at tangles. The Bernese Mountain Dog Club of Western Australia describes this approach in its grooming guidance.

Grooming frequency depends on the individual dog and how much it is shedding. As a breed-club rule of thumb, the Bernese Breeders Association of Great Britain suggests a thorough weekly groom with lighter brushing every couple of days; daily grooming may be needed during a heavy moult. See its grooming FAQs.
Manage hot weather directly
- Keep fresh, cool water available and provide access to shade.
- Take walks and exercise during cooler parts of the day.
- Never leave the dog unattended in a vehicle.
These steps address heat without removing the coat’s protective layers. Follow the AKC’s summer grooming and heat guidance rather than relying on a shave to keep a dog comfortable.

Keep paw-pad fur tidy if needed
The Bernese Mountain Dog Club of Western Australia notes that fur between the paw pads can be trimmed flush with the pads. This limited trim is different from shaving the body coat.

Routine cosmetic shaving for summer comfort is not the same as removing a serious mat. AKC grooming guidance allows that a professional groomer may need to cut down coat when severe tangles or thick buildup prevent the skin from drying. In that situation, the aim is to resolve the coat problem, not to provide a general cooling treatment. AKC: How Should You Groom a Double-Coated Dog?

If mats are dense, home brushing is difficult, or the coat remains damp against the skin, ask a professional groomer to assess it rather than trying to shave the dog yourself. For recurring sores, irritation, unusual shedding, or other skin concerns, seek veterinary advice; the Western Australia breed club also recommends discussing recurring skin problems with a veterinarian.
