Get your dog to safety and contact a veterinarian or emergency animal hospital promptly if your dog was submerged—even if they seem fine now. Near-drowning can affect the lungs, and signs may be delayed. If your dog is unconscious or not breathing normally, call an emergency veterinarian immediately and follow their instructions.
What to do right away
- Keep yourself safe. Surf, currents, and open water can endanger rescuers. Do not enter dangerous water; call for help if you cannot reach your dog safely.
- Move your dog to a safe place and call a veterinarian or emergency animal hospital. Explain that your dog was in the ocean, whether they were submerged, and whether they may have swallowed seawater. Follow the veterinarian’s directions about coming in.
- Check whether your dog is breathing normally. If your dog is unconscious or breathing abnormally, tell the emergency veterinarian and follow their instructions. Do not put your fingers in your dog’s mouth. If CPR may be needed, ask the veterinarian or an emergency hotline for guidance rather than attempting a complex procedure based on a general article.
- Once veterinary contact is underway and your dog is safe, rinse and dry their coat. Use fresh water to remove salt and other irritants, then dry thoroughly. This is coat care; it does not treat lung injury or seawater ingestion.
Why a dog that seems fine still needs attention
Submersion can injure a dog’s lungs, and serious signs may not appear immediately. PetMD lists coughing, difficulty breathing, lethargy, and blue-tinged gums as possible signs of drowning, but you should not wait for symptoms before seeking veterinary care after submersion. PetMD’s guidance on dog drowning recommends immediate veterinary care after a submersion incident.
Swallowing seawater is a separate concern. Saltwater ingestion can cause vomiting and diarrhea; severe cases can disrupt electrolyte balance and affect the heart and nervous system. Cornell also describes possible muscle tremors, disorientation, seizures, and explosive watery diarrhea. There is no established safe amount of seawater to wait for before calling a veterinarian. Cornell’s salt-toxicity guidance and the ASPCA’s salt guidance explain these risks.
Signs to tell the veterinarian about
- Coughing or any change in breathing
- Lethargy or unusual weakness
- Blue-tinged gums
- Vomiting or diarrhea, especially watery diarrhea
- Muscle tremors, disorientation, or seizures
- Increased thirst or other behavior that concerns you
These signs warrant prompt veterinary advice. After submersion, contact a veterinarian even if none of them is present.

After-swim coat care
When the immediate emergency response is underway and your dog is safe, rinse them with fresh water to remove salt, sand, algae, bacteria, and other irritants. Dry them thoroughly, paying attention to paws, skin folds, and ears. Watch for vomiting, diarrhea, coughing, lethargy, skin irritation, ear discomfort, or breathing changes, and contact a veterinarian about concerning signs. Rinsing and drying help with coat and skin care; they are not treatment for possible aspiration or saltwater poisoning. The American Animal Hospital Association’s swimming-safety guidance covers rinsing, drying, and signs to monitor.

Reduce the risk on future ocean outings
- Supervise your dog closely near the water and account for tides and currents.
- Do not let your dog drink seawater.
- Know where the nearest emergency veterinary hospital is before your outing.
- For boating trips, consider a properly fitted dog life preserver as an added precaution—not a substitute for close supervision. PetMD advises using a life preserver for dogs regularly on boating trips and continuing to supervise them closely. See PetMD’s water-safety guidance.
