Start with a version your dog can solve, supervise unfamiliar toys, and adjust the activity to your dog’s interests, health, and food needs. You do not need to buy a special toy to get started.
Choose a game that fits your dog
Dogs can work with scent, search for food or a toy, manipulate a puzzle, or learn alongside a person. The best starting point is the activity your dog finds rewarding—not a particular product or a supposedly ideal difficulty. The sources do not establish one best game for every dog or a universal number of minutes or sessions per day.
- For a dog who likes to sniff: try a simple food search or scatter part of a measured meal in a safe area.
- For a dog who likes to use paws or nose on objects: introduce an easy food puzzle or a supervised household puzzle.
- For a dog who enjoys working with you: teach a new cue or small skill in a short, reward-based session.
- For a no-cost start: use a safe household setup or hide kibble in obvious places rather than buying a toy.
Keep the first attempt easy enough for your dog to discover what to do. Make it harder gradually only after your dog understands the game; if the dog cannot make progress, simplify it.

Hot-and-cold search
Ask your dog to wait or keep them out of the room while you hide a treat or favorite toy in an easy-to-find spot. Let the dog search, using a calm voice when they move away from the reward and a more animated tone as they get closer. The American Kennel Club’s hot-and-cold game uses changes in tone to help guide the search.

DIY food puzzles

Food-puzzle toys
A commercial food puzzle may release kibble when a dog nudges, rolls, paws, or moves a flap. Begin with the easiest configuration and a small amount of appealing food. Show your dog how it works if needed, then increase the challenge gradually as they learn.

Make food games safe and practical
- Account for the food: when suitable, use part of your dog’s regular measured meal. Count treats and other additions toward daily intake rather than adding them on top without adjustment.
- Check dietary suitability: ask your veterinarian before adding foods if your dog has a medical condition, dietary restriction, or a special diet. VCA’s food-enrichment guidance advises discussing enrichment foods with a veterinarian. The AVSAB guide specifically warns that peanut butter should not contain xylitol.
- Supervise and check the setup: use objects your dog cannot swallow or easily break into pieces. Watch how the dog interacts with new toys and household materials.
- Give pets separate space when needed: if another pet might interfere, compete for food, or trigger guarding, set up the game separately. Consult a qualified professional about food or toy guarding.
- Adapt to health and mobility: make the activity physically appropriate. If your dog is older, injured, or medically limited, ask your veterinarian what kinds of play and food are suitable.
What food-puzzle research does—and does not—show
Food puzzles offer a way to make some dogs work for food, but the evidence does not establish that a particular puzzle improves cognition in every household dog. In an AVSAB-hosted guide published December 15, 2021, Zazie Todd, PhD, writes: “While we need more research on food puzzle toys for pet dogs, we know more broadly that exercise and enrichment are good for dogs.”
The guide summarizes observations from studies in different settings: one study associated feeding pet dogs with toys rather than bowls with increased activity; a study of kenneled dogs reported less barking and more activity with food toys; and a study of military working dogs found no effect on reported working ability. Those findings concern different populations and outcomes; they do not establish a guaranteed benefit for an individual pet or identify one universally effective game.
