Several cat breeds are known for blue eyes, especially breeds with pointed coats—light bodies with darker color on the face, ears, feet, and tail. Siamese, Birman, Ragdoll, and Snowshoe are among the examples. But blue eyes alone do not mean a cat is Siamese or prove that it has a particular pedigree.
Why do so many pointed cats have blue eyes?
In pointed cats, the same Siamese gene associated with the coat pattern is genetically linked to blue eyes. The color is concentrated on the cooler parts of the body—the face, ears, feet, and tail—while the body is lighter. A pointed cat’s body color may darken with age.
“Siamese” can refer to a specific breed, the gene behind the pointed pattern, or the pattern itself. Those meanings are related, but they are not interchangeable: several breeds have pointed coats, and pointed cats may also be non-pedigreed. The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) also notes that blue eyes occur in cats with other coat patterns, including some white or predominantly white cats. Eye color is an appearance trait, not a pedigree test. CFA coat and color guidance; CFA, “Patterns in the Domesticated Cat – Part 3: The Pointed Patterns,” June 25, 2026.
9 cat breeds with blue eyes
These breeds are examples associated with blue eyes, not a complete list of every blue-eyed cat. For most of them, the link is their pointed pattern; Tonkinese eye color specifically varies by pattern.

-
Siamese
The Siamese is the clearest example: CFA describes the breed’s eyes as deep, vivid blue, and TICA also highlights its blue eyes. The coat is pointed, with darker color on the extremities. CFA Siamese profile; TICA Siamese profile.
-
Balinese
CFA includes Balinese among the breeds defined by a pointed pattern. That pattern provides the context for the breed’s association with blue eyes; it does not mean that every blue-eyed cat is a Balinese—or a Siamese.
-
Birman
The Birman has a pointed pattern with distinctive white feet. Its blue-eye association goes with the pointed coloring, while the white feet set its appearance apart from many other pointed breeds.
-
Colorpoint Shorthair
CFA lists the Colorpoint Shorthair among pointed breeds. The darker points and lighter body are the visual pattern associated with blue eyes.

Himalayan Persian
The Himalayan Persian is another pointed breed on CFA’s list. Its coat pattern follows the same general arrangement of darker extremities against a lighter body.
-
Javanese
CFA also includes the Javanese among pointed breeds. Its blue-eye association is pattern-based, rather than evidence that the cat is a Siamese.
-
Ragdoll
CFA describes all three Ragdoll patterns as pointed or variations of pointed, including mitted and pointed-and-white patterns. These variations change the distribution of white, but remain within the pointed-pattern family.
-
Snowshoe
The TICA Snowshoe standard specifies eyes of any shade of blue and lists other eye colors as a penalty. The breed’s pointed coloring is combined with white markings. TICA Snowshoe standard (revised May 1, 2009); TICA Snowshoe breed introduction.

Tonkinese
Tonkinese eye color depends on coat pattern: TICA describes blue eyes in pointed cats, aqua in mink-patterned cats, and green-gold to yellow-green in solid-patterned cats. So Tonkinese belong on this list only with that qualification—not because every Tonkinese has blue eyes. TICA Tonkinese breed introduction.
Does a blue-eyed cat have to be Siamese?
No. Blue eyes appear in several pointed breeds, and they can also occur with other coat patterns. A cat’s eye color cannot establish its breed or pedigree; CFA cautions that even a cat with a pointed pattern may be non-pedigreed. Breed standards and descriptions explain expected appearances, not the ancestry of an individual cat. CFA pointed-pattern guidance.
