Stop your cat from reaching the wound as soon as you can: use the E-collar or other barrier provided by the veterinarian, and call the clinic if you do not have one or your cat has chewed or removed stitches. Licking and chewing can injure tissue and interfere with healing. Do not put creams, disinfectants, or home remedies on the wound unless the veterinarian directs you to.
Block access to the wound first
Use the protective collar or recovery suit supplied by your veterinary clinic according to its instructions. If your cat starts licking an incision and you have no barrier, contact the hospital for advice rather than improvising a covering. If stitches have been pulled out, call promptly. VCA explains post-operative care in Post-Operative Instructions in Cats.
For an open wound, VCA’s guidance is direct: “Do not allow your cat to lick or chew the open wound.” Depending on where the wound is, a veterinarian may recommend a protective collar, bandage, stockinette, cat coat, or T-shirt. Choose a barrier that works for the wound’s location
E-collar or protective cone
An Elizabethan collar (E-collar or cone) is the broadly applicable option for preventing direct access to a wound, incision, or dressing. Keep it on for the duration set by the treating veterinarian; healing time varies with the injury, and a general rule cannot replace the clinic’s instructions. VCA’s Elizabethan Collars in Cats advises a fit that allows two fingers to fit comfortably between the collar and neck. Check the skin around the neck daily for rubbing or abrasions.

Supervise your cat at first and check that they can reach food and water and are not getting the cone caught on furniture or other objects. Ask the clinic to adjust it if it is too tight, slips off, or still lets your cat reach the wound.
Recovery suit, clothing, or bandage
A cat recovery suit or other covering may suit some wound locations, but it should be approved by the veterinarian and must actually prevent access. A garment that covers the body may not protect a wound on the head, leg, or tail. Do not assume a soft or donut-style collar is an effective substitute without checking with the clinic.

Bandages can protect a wound, but they require correct application and monitoring. Follow the veterinary team’s directions and do not remove a bandage unless instructed. VCA advises checking bandages at least twice daily in its Bandage and Splint Care in Cats guidance. Contact the clinic if the bandage becomes wet, slips, or seems to be causing a problem.
Clean the wound only as directed
For many open wounds, VCA lists warm tap water or warm saline as cleaning options; use another solution only if your veterinarian recommends it. Do not apply creams, ointments, medication, or disinfectants on your own. Products that are unsuitable for a wound may damage tissue, slow healing, or harm a cat that licks them.

- Avoid rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, soap, shampoo, tea tree oil, herbal preparations, and other home remedies unless specifically directed by the veterinarian.
- If the wound is bleeding, apply direct pressure with an absorbent dressing and seek veterinary care. Pressure may help while arranging transport; it is not a substitute for an examination.

Contact the treating clinic promptly if an incision has continuous blood or fluid seepage, bleeding that continues beyond 24 hours, swelling, excessive redness, a foul smell, discharge, or missing sutures. VCA’s incision-care guidance identifies these as reasons to contact the veterinarian; post-operative instructions also advise calling about abnormalities or concerns (Surgical Discharge Instructions for Cats).

For an open wound, call if bloody, green, or yellow discharge persists for several consecutive days. These signs are not a complete diagnostic checklist: seek urgent veterinary care if your cat’s condition is rapidly worsening, and follow any more specific escalation instructions from your clinic.
