Choose a dog life jacket using your dog’s measurements and that specific model’s sizing chart—not a size label or buoyancy claim alone. The jacket should stay secure without restricting breathing or leg movement, and you should check its fit and your dog’s movement in supervised shallow water before relying on it.
How should a dog life jacket fit?
Start with the manufacturer’s chart for the exact jacket you are considering. Chest or ribcage girth is a key measurement; some brands also ask for neck size, body length, or weight. Measure as directed and confirm your dog falls within the model’s stated ranges. Do not assume that a size in one brand matches the same size in another.
The American Kennel Club recommends a snug fit that still allows swimming and ordinary movement, and advises considering how the jacket fits when wet. After adjusting it, check that it stays in place without constricting your dog or interfering with breathing or leg movement. Then observe your dog wearing it in shallow water under close supervision. These fit and movement checks are practical guidance, not a substitute for supervision around water. When your dog falls between sizes
Follow the recommendation on the selected product’s own chart. For example, HOUND identifies chest measurement as its most important sizing guide and gives a model-specific recommendation for dogs between sizes. That advice applies to HOUND’s jacket; it should not be transferred to other brands. Check HOUND’s current product guidance.

What does buoyancy mean for dog life jackets?
The sources available here do not establish a universal dog-jacket buoyancy rating or a common canine device standard. That means a buoyancy number or a human life-jacket category cannot be used as a reliable apples-to-apples comparison of dog products.
Cressi Dog says it used EN 13138-1, a standard for buoyant aids used in swimming instruction, as the basis for its own tests. The manufacturer also states: “As there are no reference standards for flotation devices for dogs, it was decided to use the EN 13138-1 standard (Buoyant aids for swimming instruction – Part 1: SAFETY REQUIREMENTS AND TEST METHODS FOR Buoyant aids for swimming instruction) as the basis for carrying out the tests.” This describes Cressi Dog’s testing approach; it does not establish that all dog jackets meet that standard or that it is a canine-jacket certification. The U.S. Coast Guard’s categories and approval information concern human personal flotation devices. They do not establish a dog jacket’s rating or approval, so do not apply human PFD buoyancy figures or approval claims to canine products. What features should owners look for?
Compare the design against your dog’s body and the conditions in which you expect to use it. Product descriptions can identify features, but marketing language alone does not prove how well a jacket performs.

- Size range and adjustability: Check the listed measurements and how the jacket adjusts. It should be possible to secure it without making it restrictive.
- Flotation coverage and placement: Look at which parts of the body the design supports. Do not infer performance from broad claims such as “high buoyancy” unless the manufacturer provides meaningful, applicable evidence.
- Mobility and comfort: Check leg movement on land and during the supervised shallow-water trial.
- Visibility: Consider color and reflective details where the product page documents them.
- Retrieval features: If a handle matters for your use, check its position and the manufacturer’s stated purpose. A handle is not a guarantee that lifting a dog will be safe in every situation.
How to compare product examples without assuming a winner
Ruffwear Confluence, Cressi Dog Life Jacket, and Spinlock FIDO are examples with manufacturer product information available. Those pages establish product details, not that one jacket is superior to another. Check each current chart and description against your dog’s measurements and needs.

BoatUS describes its dog-jacket work as observational testing that considered fit, adjustment, ease of use, comfort, and flotation feedback. That is a useful reminder to assess more than a product label, but observational feedback is not a universal dog-specific rating or proof that every product was tested under the same certification system.
