Why is my cat waking me up at night?

A cat may also rest for much of the day while the household is away, then look for food, play, or company in the evening or overnight. How do I stop my cat waking me for food?
First notice whether your cat wakes you specifically to be fed, and whether it happens at a predictable time. If the cat otherwise sleeps through most of the night and the waking is clearly about an early meal, a programmable timed feeder may dispense a planned portion without making your response part of the routine. A feeder is an optional convenience, not a treatment for pain or illness and not a guaranteed fix for waking, vocalizing, or other behavior. Check that it can dispense the cat’s planned portion at the needed time and is straightforward to operate and clean. Keep the overall amount of food appropriate for your cat; changing meal timing should not mean unintentionally adding extra food.
Build a routine that meets your cat’s needs
Add play before bedtime
Schedule regular interactive play during the day and evening, especially before the household settles down. A supervised chase or wand toy can give your cat an outlet for activity. Put toys with strings or small parts away afterward if they could be unsafe when left unsupervised.

VCA’s guidance recommends encouraging play and feeding during daytime and evening hours so a cat’s schedule more closely matches the household’s. Try to make play a regular part of the routine rather than relying on a single late-night session to solve every cause of waking.
Offer enrichment and foraging
Food puzzles, foraging activities, and meals offered through suitable play or manipulation toys can provide activity when you are busy or away. You can also try reward-based training. Choose activities your cat will actually use, and keep the cat’s total food consistent with its needs.

Keep your response consistent overnight
If your cat is demanding attention or food, responding with a meal, play, or extended interaction can teach it that waking you works. Avoid rewarding the behavior; instead, make play, meals, and attention predictable at other times. If you decide to keep your cat out of the bedroom, provide a safe, comfortable space with water, a litter box, and appropriate enrichment.
When should I call the vet?
Contact a veterinarian if nighttime waking or vocalizing is new, persistent, or accompanied by other changes in behavior, appetite, activity, or comfort. Do not assume that a cat is simply bored or seeking attention when the pattern has changed.

Cornell’s overview of cognitive dysfunction notes that altered sleep-wake cycles and nighttime vocalization can occur with age-related cognitive changes, typically noticeable in cats aged 10 years or older. Pain and conditions such as kidney failure, hyperthyroidism, and hypertension can also affect behavior. These are possibilities for a veterinarian to assess, not diagnoses that can be made from nighttime waking alone.
Before an appointment, it may help to note when the waking happens, whether it involves meowing, play, or food seeking, and whether anything else has changed. A record of meals, activity, and other behavior can help your veterinarian understand the pattern.
