You can support shelter pets through your will by leaving a fixed sum, a share of what remains in your estate, or a specific asset to an animal-welfare organization. First confirm the charity’s exact legal name and current gift instructions, then have the gift included in a will that meets the law where you live. A charitable bequest does not, by itself, arrange care for your own pet.
Choose how the shelter should receive the gift
Common options include a fixed amount, a percentage of the estate residue, or a particular asset. Some charities also describe contingent gifts, which take effect only if a stated event occurs. The names and legal effects of these gifts can vary by jurisdiction, so use local advice when you are unsure.
| Gift type | How it works | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed sum (pecuniary gift) | You leave a specified amount of money. | The nominal amount is clear, but the estate’s value and other obligations may change before the will takes effect. Dogs Trust and PDSA explain this form in UK guidance: Dogs Trust and PDSA. |
| Residuary gift | You leave all or a stated share of what remains after liabilities and earlier gifts are dealt with. | The amount varies with the estate’s final value. Consider how the share affects other beneficiaries. Dogs Trust and PDSA describe this option in the UK. |
| Specific gift | You leave a named item or asset. | Ask whether the organization can accept and use it, and consider what should happen if you no longer own it. GOV.UK lists an item as a possible charitable gift, while Best Friends provides charity-specific examples: GOV.UK and Best Friends Animal Society. |
| Contingent gift | A gift takes effect if a specified event occurs, such as a first beneficiary dying before you. | Make the fallback condition and recipient clear. Best Friends offers an example for its own planned gifts; it is not universal legal wording. |
For an example of how a fixed gift differs from a residuary share: a fixed gift names an amount, while a residuary gift names a proportion of whatever remains. The first is more predictable as a nominal figure; the second rises or falls with the estate. Neither is automatically better for every family or estate.
Identify the right organization and purpose
Be precise about who should receive the gift. A local shelter may be a branch of a larger charity or a separate legal organization, and a familiar trading name may not be the name used for a bequest. UK government guidance advises including the charity’s full name and checking its details with the charity or the relevant register. Confirm the intended entity directly, especially if you want a particular local shelter to benefit.
#1 Best Overall
Decide whether the gift should support the organization generally or a specific purpose. Ask the charity whether a restriction you have in mind is workable and how it recommends describing the purpose. Best Friends’ sample language is for its own general purposes, not a universal clause.
Put the gift into a valid will
- Contact the intended charity. Request its current legal name, registration details where applicable, and any gift instructions. Confirm that it can accept the type of gift you intend to leave.
- Choose the gift form. Consider how a fixed sum, a share of the residue, a specific asset, or a contingent gift fits with your estate and the people or organizations you also want to benefit.
- Have the clause prepared under local law. A charity’s sample wording can help identify the organization, but it is not a substitute for a legally valid will in your jurisdiction. GOV.UK’s will guidance covers beneficiaries and executors and outlines circumstances in which professional advice may be appropriate: Write your will.
- Sign and store the will as local law requires. Keep it safely and tell your executor or a trusted person where it is. GOV.UK also recommends letting someone know where the will is kept.
Consider advice from a local estate-planning professional if your situation includes complex family claims, dependants who need care, overseas residence or property, or business ownership. Will formalities and the legal treatment of charitable gifts differ across countries and, in some places, within them.

Understand tax rules in your jurisdiction
Tax treatment is not universal. In the UK, GOV.UK says charitable gifts are deducted from an estate before inheritance tax is calculated and that the inheritance-tax rate may be reduced when 10% or more of the estate is left to charity. These are UK rules; do not assume they apply where you live. For US planned giving, the ASPCA describes its information as educational and recommends consulting your own tax adviser, attorney, or financial planner: ASPCA Planned Giving.

A bequest to a shelter does not obligate it to take in or rehome your animal. If you want your pet cared for after your death, speak with the organization directly about whether it accepts animals and what arrangements it requires. The NSW Government specifically advises checking with the organization: Learn about wills.

Choose a reliable caregiver and discuss the commitment with them. Estimate future food, veterinary, and other care costs, and make the financial arrangement explicit. The ASPCA notes that a will can leave money to a caregiver, but administration may take time; for some complicated or expensive care situations, a trust may provide a more continuing formal arrangement. Its pet-planning guidance is at Making a Plan for Your Pet. Whether a trust is available or suitable depends on local law.
