Anemia means a cat has too few red blood cells or too little red-cell capacity to carry oxygen. It is a sign of an underlying problem—not a diagnosis on its own—and may result from blood loss, red blood cell destruction, or reduced production. Pale gums, weakness, or fast breathing can be warning signs; collapse, breathing difficulty, marked weakness, or suspected bleeding warrant prompt veterinary assessment.
What anemia means in cats
Red blood cells carry oxygen through the body. When their number or oxygen-carrying capacity falls, a cat may tire easily or become weak. How serious anemia is and what treatment is needed depend on its cause, how quickly it developed, and the cat’s overall condition.
What causes anemia in cats?
Veterinarians group causes by what happens to red blood cells: they are lost, destroyed, or not produced in sufficient numbers. These categories help guide testing; they are not a complete list of possible diagnoses.
Blood loss
Blood loss can follow trauma or visible bleeding, but it can also occur internally. Possible causes include gastrointestinal ulcers or tumors, clotting problems, and parasites. Fleas and intestinal worms are especially relevant in kittens. Slow, ongoing blood loss can eventually cause iron deficiency.

Red blood cell destruction
Red cells may be destroyed faster than the body can replace them. Causes include immune-mediated disease, infections, toxins or drug exposure, metabolic or physical damage, and inherited conditions. The MSD Veterinary Manual discusses infections such as FeLV, FIV, hemotropic mycoplasmas, and Cytauxzoon among possible causes (MSD Veterinary Manual: Anemia in Cats).
Reduced red blood cell production
Chronic kidney disease, chronic inflammation or other illness, poor nutrition in some cases, and bone-marrow disorders can reduce production. Diseased kidneys may make less erythropoietin, a signal involved in red-cell production. Cornell notes that 15–30% of geriatric cats are affected by chronic kidney disease and that 30–65% of cats with advancing kidney disease develop some anemia; the page does not state the figures’ underlying study or year (Cornell Feline Health Center: Anemia).

What symptoms should I look for?
Signs vary, and they can be subtle when anemia develops gradually. Possible signs include:
- Pale gums
- Lethargy, weakness, or reduced stamina
- Reduced appetite
- Faster-than-usual breathing or heart rate
- Yellow discoloration of the gums, skin, or eyes (jaundice), which can occur when red cells are being destroyed
- Visible blood or black stools when bleeding is involved
Some cats with long-standing anemia adapt and show few obvious signs. A cat’s appearance at home cannot confirm or rule out anemia; blood tests are needed.

When is anemia an emergency?
Seek prompt veterinary assessment if your cat collapses, has difficulty breathing, is markedly weak, has pale or yellow gums, or may be bleeding. Sudden, severe blood loss can be fatal. The MSD Veterinary Manual reports that sudden loss of more than one-third of total blood volume can lead to collapse and death if the blood is not replaced; this is clinical context, not a threshold an owner can reliably measure at home.
How is anemia diagnosed?
The veterinarian will ask about when signs began, medicines, possible toxin exposure, travel, and previous illness, then examine your cat. Blood work helps confirm anemia, assess its severity, and look for clues to the cause.

- Liquid daily dietary supplement for dogs and cats. Contains iron, copper and 5 essential vitamins.
- Designed for dogs and cats that may not be getting complete nutrition.
- Liquid formula has tasty beef liver flavor accepted by dogs and cats.
- May be administered directly into pet’s mouth or over food.
- CBC and PCV/hematocrit: A complete blood count and packed cell volume (PCV), also called hematocrit, measure red-cell levels and help show whether other blood-cell types are affected.
- Reticulocyte assessment: Reticulocytes are young red blood cells. Their number helps show whether the bone marrow is responding to anemia.
- Additional tests: Depending on the findings, a veterinarian may examine blood-cell appearance, check organ function or infections such as FeLV and FIV, or recommend imaging or bone-marrow testing.
Cornell gives a feline PCV reference range of 25–45% and describes a PCV below 25% as anemic; VCA gives the same range and threshold. These published reference values are not a substitute for a veterinarian’s interpretation of an individual cat’s result (VCA Animal Hospitals: Anemia in Cats).

- Regenerative anemia: The marrow is responding by increasing production of young red blood cells.
- Nonregenerative anemia: The marrow’s response is insufficient.
A reticulocyte assessment helps the veterinarian classify the response and narrow the possible causes. The classification, together with the rest of the examination and test results, informs what further testing may be useful.
How is anemia in cats treated?
Treatment targets the cause and depends on severity. Depending on the diagnosis, veterinary care may address bleeding, parasites, infection, immune-mediated red-cell destruction, kidney disease, or bone-marrow disease. Iron is appropriate only in selected circumstances; do not give iron supplements or human medicines unless a veterinarian directs you to.
If anemia is life-threatening, a blood transfusion may stabilize a cat while the veterinary team identifies and treats the underlying problem. A transfusion supports the cat; it does not by itself cure the cause.
What is the outlook for a cat with anemia?
Prognosis depends on the underlying diagnosis and the cat’s condition. VCA notes that many cats do well when anemia is identified early and the cat is otherwise relatively healthy. Toxin-related, cancer-related, immune-mediated, or severe-trauma cases may have a less favorable outlook. Only the treating veterinarian can discuss what the findings mean for an individual cat.
