Belo, an eight-year-old pit bull mix, was found by NYPD in a shopping bag in January 2025, critically ill and unable to stand. The ASPCA says he spent six months in its care before being adopted by Sam Porto and his girlfriend, Marielle. His recovery was an extraordinary individual case—not a guide to what other severely neglected dogs can be expected to survive.
How Belo was found and treated
According to the ASPCA’s account, NYPD found Belo in January 2025 and brought him to Veterinary Emergency & Referral Group (VERG), an emergency hospital and ASPCA partner clinic. He was eight years old and in critical condition. The ASPCA reported that his body condition score was one on the nine-point Purina Body Condition System.
ASPCA veterinarian Dr. Aubrey Crowley described Belo as severely emaciated and anemic, with failing organs and infected pressure sores. He could not stand or sit up. Crowley said: “Belo was the most extremely emaciated dog I have ever seen come in alive. He was hours away from dying,” and added that she believed he would not have survived if found a day later.
The ASPCA says Belo was too fragile to transfer from VERG for more than three weeks. Once stable enough to move, he was taken to the ASPCA Animal Hospital. The ASPCA narrative describes care that included repositioning him every few hours, extensive wound and bandage care, a urinary catheter and IV medications, hand-feeding and offering water, and lubricating and protecting his eyes. These details come from the organization’s account, not an independently reviewed medical record.

Belo’s recovery, step by step
The ASPCA reports that Belo spent six months in its care, including two months in intensive care and five months receiving bandage changes. About eight weeks into his recovery, he took his first steps. He later gained muscle and received physical therapy.
Crowley said, “Belo did not just survive; he blew away all of our expectations.” She also described the case as exceptional in her experience: “At this point in my career, I have seen hundreds of emaciated animals. I have not seen one come in as sick as he was and live.” These are her observations about Belo and her clinical experience, not evidence of survival rates or likely outcomes for other dogs.
How Belo found a home
After roughly six months in ASPCA care, Belo was ready for a home. Sam Porto, an ASPCA Animal Hospital Floor and Operations Manager, adopted him with his girlfriend, Marielle. Porto recalled, “You could extend your hand to him, and he trusted you instantly. It made the recovery process so much easier.”
The ASPCA story describes Belo settling into the couple’s home in Worcester, Massachusetts, where he enjoyed naps, people, toys, and two dog beds. It does not establish his present-day condition.
What Belo’s story can—and cannot—tell us
Belo’s case shows the recovery and adoption journey of one dog, as recounted by the ASPCA in its December 2, 2025 story. It does not establish why he was injured, who was responsible, or any legal outcome. Nor can one exceptional recovery predict another animal’s prognosis. A veterinarian familiar with an individual dog’s condition is the appropriate source for that dog’s outlook.
