The Prague Ratter, or Pražský krysařík, is a Czech companion breed known for its very small frame, lively nature, and close-fitting coat. The FCI standard gives ideal measurements of 20–28 cm at the withers and 2.6 kg, while describing a dog that is gentle and affectionate with family, alert and active, and somewhat reserved with strangers. Those figures are breed-standard ideals, not a guarantee for every dog.
What is a Prague Ratter?
The Prague Ratter’s Czech name is Pražský krysařík. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) lists it as breed No. 363, originating in the Czech Republic, and places it in Group 9, Companion and Toy Dogs. The FCI records provisional recognition on 29 April 2019; it gives 20 February 2019 as the publication date of the official valid standard. FCI breed nomenclature
The FCI standard says the breed was historically associated with the Czech state and used for killing rats; its current use is as a companion dog. This is the standard’s historical summary, not a claim that every detail has been independently established by archival evidence. FCI Standard No. 363
How big is a Prague Ratter?
The FCI standard gives the same ideal measurements for males and females:

These are ideals in the FCI breed standard, not a promised adult size or a substitute for assessing an individual dog. The standard describes the Prague Ratter as small, compact, and almost square. FCI Standard No. 363
What does a Prague Ratter look like?
The breed standard describes two coat types. A short coat is glossy and close-fitting. A medium-long coat has fringes on the ears, hindquarters, and tail, with a somewhat more open coat on the chest. Coat type matters when choosing a grooming routine; advice written specifically for a short, smooth coat may not transfer exactly to a fringed coat. FCI Standard No. 363

What is the Prague Ratter’s temperament?
The FCI standard calls the breed “Gentle, curious and tender.” It also describes the dog as quick, active, alert, and lively, with a steady pace. The standard says Prague Ratters may be slightly reserved with strangers by nature while being very friendly within the family. These are breed-description tendencies, not a guarantee of an individual dog’s behavior. FCI Standard No. 363

Because the breed is active, include opportunities for movement and engagement in its routine. The available breed-care guidance mentions walks and play, but does not establish an authoritative Prague Ratter-specific daily exercise duration. How do you care for a Prague Ratter?
Grooming
For the short, smooth coat, DogZone recommends brushing with a rubber brush at least once a week. This is secondary care guidance, not an FCI requirement, and may not suit the medium-long coat in exactly the same way. Everyday activity
The standard establishes that the breed is active and alert but does not prescribe a daily walk length or exercise schedule. Health discussions with your veterinarian
Patellar luxation, in which the kneecap moves out of its normal position, is a condition worth understanding in small dogs. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine notes that medial patellar luxation is the most common form and often affects small-breed dogs. That information does not establish how prevalent the condition is in Prague Ratters specifically. If you notice an unusual gait or have questions about a dog’s breeding history, discuss the individual dog with a veterinarian rather than trying to diagnose it from a breed description.
