A little dried material may be normal, but persistent tearing or discharge can signal irritation, infection, injury, a drainage problem, or another eye condition. The discharge’s appearance alone cannot tell you which cause is responsible.
When are eye boogers normal, and when are they a symptom?
A small amount of dried material at the inner corner of an otherwise comfortable-looking eye is different from an eye that stays wet or repeatedly develops discharge. The more important clues are whether the problem persists or returns, whether one or both eyes are affected, and whether your cat has discomfort or other changes.
Veterinarians may call excessive tear overflow epiphora. Tears can overflow because the eye is making too many or because they are not draining properly. Both problems have several possible causes.
What can cause a cat’s eye discharge?
Conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis is inflammation of the tissue lining the eyelids and covering part of the eye. It may cause watery or thick, dark discharge, redness, swelling, squinting, or frequent blinking. Viral and bacterial infections are common causes, but irritants and some plants can also trigger inflammation. Discharge by itself does not establish that an infection is present; an examination or testing may be needed to identify the cause. See Cornell’s overview of feline conjunctivitis and the Merck Veterinary Manual discussion of conjunctival disorders.

Eye irritation, a scratch, or a corneal ulcer
Dirt trapped in the eye, a scratch, chemical exposure, abnormal eyelashes, and infection can injure or irritate the cornea, the clear surface at the front of the eye. Discharge may accompany a corneal ulcer. Cloudiness and sensitivity to bright light are additional warning signs, and a severe ulcer can threaten the eye. Details are available in Cornell’s information on corneal ulcers.
Tear overflow or poor tear drainage
Excess tearing can occur with conjunctivitis, allergies, injury, abnormal eyelashes, corneal ulcers, infection, eyelid-shape problems, or glaucoma. Tears may also overflow if a tear duct is obstructed. Some flat-faced cats, including Persians and Himalayans, may have facial anatomy that makes drainage less effective. VCA explains these possibilities in its guide to eye discharge and epiphora in cats.

A veterinarian may investigate or flush a tear duct when obstruction is suspected. In some cases, surgery may be considered; Merck’s guide to nasal-cavity and tear-duct disorders describes veterinary assessment and management.
Respiratory illness
Eye discharge can occur along with nasal discharge, sneezing, or other signs of feline respiratory disease. If those signs appear together, tell your veterinarian; the eye symptom may be part of a broader illness. See Merck Veterinary Manual: Feline Respiratory Disease Complex.

Does the color or thickness reveal the cause?
No. Discharge can be watery or thicker and dark, but its appearance alone is not a reliable diagnosis. A veterinarian considers it alongside signs such as redness, swelling, squinting, cloudiness, and light sensitivity, and may need to examine the eye or run tests. Do not assume a particular color means the problem is minor or that it must be bacterial.
When should you contact a veterinarian?
Contact a veterinarian if discharge occurs with apparent discomfort, squinting, frequent blinking, redness or swelling, cloudiness, or sensitivity to light. Also arrange an assessment if the wetness or discharge is persistent or keeps returning. Discomfort with discharge can point to a more serious eye disorder, and cloudiness or light sensitivity may accompany an ulcer that can worsen and threaten vision. Cornell ophthalmology professor Thomas Kern, DVM, advises veterinary care when a cat has apparent eye discomfort and discharge, to rule out more serious disorders.

How will a veterinarian find the cause?
The evaluation depends on your cat’s signs and examination findings. It may include an eye and tear-duct examination, a tear-production test, fluorescein staining to check for a corneal ulcer, or measurement of eye pressure. Treatment is cause-specific and may involve prescription medication or addressing a drainage or eyelid problem. Do not use leftover eye medicine or human eye drops unless your veterinarian directs you to.
How can you clean buildup safely?
For material on the fur around the eye, gently wipe with a soft, clean cotton pad moistened with water, then keep the area clean and dry. This removes external buildup; it does not treat the cause of discharge or replace veterinary care when warning signs are present.
