A Prague Ratter may suit a home looking for a small, active companion, but the breed standard is a description—not a promise of how an individual dog will behave or what care it will need. Before committing, learn what the official breed information says, assess the particular dog in front of you, and review its records with a veterinarian.
What is a Prague Ratter?
Prague Ratter is the English name for the Czech breed Pražský krysařík. The Federation Cynologique Internationale (FCI) lists it as breed number 363, with the Czech Republic as its country of origin. The FCI listing says provisional recognition was accepted on 29 April 2019; as of 5 October 2026, the breed remains listed as provisionally recognized.
The FCI places the breed in Group 9, Section 9, “Continental Toy Spaniel, Russian Toy & Prague Ratter,” as a companion dog with no working trial. Its official English standard was published on 20 February 2019. The standard’s historical note describes the dogs’ use in killing rats and their later role as family companions. That history does not establish that an individual dog will reliably control pests or perform as a modern working dog.
What should you expect from a Prague Ratter?
The standard describes a small, compact, active, alert, and lively dog. It characterizes the temperament as “Gentle, curious and tender. Quick with good movement and steady pace. By nature slightly reserved towards strangers but very friendly in the family. With natural nobility and character.” These are the breed standard’s expectations, not guarantees about a particular dog.

Use the description as a starting point, then judge the individual. Ask how the dog behaves around unfamiliar people, in everyday household situations, and during activity. A dog’s observed temperament and needs matter more to your decision than a general breed description.
Is a Prague Ratter a good fit for your home?
Consider whether your household can accommodate a small, active companion and respond to the dog you actually meet. Before deciding, discuss these practical questions with the current caretaker or source:

- Ask for records. Request available veterinary records and, where relevant, records for the dog’s parents. Have a veterinarian help interpret them; no specific test panel or definitive screening protocol is established here.
- Meet the dog and ask about its behavior. Whenever practical, observe the dog in person and ask specific questions about its routine and temperament. If an in-person meeting is not practical, use a reputable video or remote process where appropriate.
- Assess the source’s transparency. Ask what information the source can provide about the dog, its care, and any follow-up support. Consider how clearly and consistently your questions are answered.
- Check local guidance. Confirm applicable requirements and responsible acquisition options with local authorities or organizations as appropriate, and with the national kennel organization for breed-related guidance.
These are prudent checks for an individual dog, not a Prague Ratter-specific health or acquisition protocol. No particular breeder, rescue, price, or local rule is established here.
