Gratitude also means caring for them well
A good fit matters more than the idea of having a cat. Before adopting or buying, consider the cat’s personality and activity level, compatibility with everyone and other animals at home, and the time available for care. The CDC recommends learning proper care beforehand and arranging a veterinary visit for a newly adopted cat within a few days to a week, along with routine veterinary care, vaccinations, and advice about preventive treatments suited to the cat’s lifestyle.
Daily care also includes basic hygiene. The CDC advises changing litter daily and washing hands afterward. People who are pregnant or immunocompromised should avoid cleaning the litter box if possible; if no one else can do it, use disposable gloves and wash hands afterward. Children should be supervised around cats, and rough play should be avoided.

Cats can carry germs even when they look healthy, and bites or scratches can spread them. Wash a wound immediately and seek medical care for a serious wound, signs of infection, an ill cat, or uncertainty about the cat’s rabies vaccination status. The CDC estimates that about 20–80% of reported cat bites and scratches become infected; the total number of incidents is unknown because many go unreported, so that figure is not the risk from any one interaction.
