Some ordinary household items can seriously harm cats, including certain lilies, human pain medicines, dog flea treatments containing permethrin, corrosive cleaners, and laundry products. Keep them out of reach, and contact a veterinarian promptly if your cat may have been exposed.
Which plants are dangerous to cats?
Lilium lilies and daylilies
Lilies in the Lilium group—such as Easter, Oriental, and Japanese lilies—and daylilies (Hemerocallis) can cause life-threatening kidney injury in cats. Any part of these plants may be hazardous, including leaves, stems, petals, and pollen. Cats can also be exposed by grooming pollen from their coat or drinking water that held lilies. Even a small pollen exposure can have severe consequences. Keep these flowers out of your home and away from your cat. ASPCA guidance on feline hazards and its plant identification guidance describe these risks.
“Lily” does not identify one toxicity
Common names can be misleading. Peace lilies can irritate a cat’s mouth, but they are not the same plants as kidney-toxic Lilium lilies and Hemerocallis daylilies. Identify a plant by its botanical name rather than assuming all plants called lilies have the same effects. ASPCA also flags sago palms, tulips, oleander, and autumn crocus as hazardous plants, while listing roses, sunflowers, zinnias, orchids, petunias, African violets, Boston ferns, and spider plants as examples it considers non-toxic. Check the identity of bouquets and houseplants before bringing them within a cat’s reach.
Which medicines and flea products are risky?
Human pain relievers
Ibuprofen and naproxen can cause vomiting, diarrhea, gastrointestinal ulcers, and kidney injury in cats. Acetaminophen can damage red blood cells. Keep medicines secured in a cabinet rather than on counters, bedside tables, or in bags a cat can reach. Never give a cat a human medicine unless a veterinarian specifically directs you to do so. ASPCA’s feline hazard guidance lists these medicines and potential effects.

Permethrin in some flea and insect products
Some flea and tick treatments made for dogs or large animals, as well as some household insecticides, contain permethrin. A cat may be exposed through skin contact or ingestion; possible signs include drooling, coughing, vomiting, wobbliness, tremors, and seizures. Use only flea and tick products specifically formulated for cats, and follow the label. Keep products intended for other animals away from your cat.
Which cleaners, laundry products, and household chemicals can injure cats?
Corrosive cleaners and chemicals
Risk depends on the product, its concentration, and how exposure occurs; not every household cleaner is poisonous when used according to its label. Undiluted or concentrated corrosives can burn tissue. Examples include bleach, toilet and drain cleaners, rust removers, some pool chemicals, and the contents of alkaline batteries. Possible signs after exposure include drooling, vomiting, mouth ulcers, difficulty swallowing, lethargy, and breathing difficulty. ASPCA’s corrosive household product guidance notes that diluted products may cause milder effects, while more concentrated exposures can cause serious injury.

If using diluted bleach on a toy or kennel, rinse it thoroughly and let it air until the bleach odor has dissipated before the cat returns. Dilute vinegar-and-water solutions should also be rinsed and dried; enzyme cleaners should dry before a pet returns to the area. Follow each product’s label and keep cats away while cleaning and until treated surfaces are ready for them. ASPCA Poison Control’s household product guide explains that safe use depends on the product and directions.
Dryer sheets, fabric softeners, and diffuser liquids
Some dryer sheets, fabric softeners, and liquid potpourri or diffuser products contain cationic detergents that can burn a cat’s mouth and esophagus. Keep used and unused laundry products, diffuser liquids, and potpourri inaccessible. Cats can also be sensitive to essential oils: significant ingestion or inhalation may cause serious effects, so store oils and related products securely and use them cautiously. Product ingredients and exposure matter; the ASPCA household products guidance discusses essential oils and household agents.

- [SCENARIO-BASED FURNITURE PROTECTION] Tired of watching your sofa, curtains, or carpets turn into scratching posts? Our spray acts as an invisible boundary, helping to steer your cat away from delicate decor. It’s the ideal solution for protecting new furniture and holiday decorations like Christmas trees from curious claws and persistent scratching.
- [DUAL-SIGNAL TRAINING TECHNOLOGY] This formula works through two natural cues that cats instinctively respect. First, a botanical scent creates an olfactory boundary to discourage marking; second, a naturally-derived mild taste provides a gentle reminder for chewers. It’s a smarter way to communicate household boundaries without the need for loud noises or stress.
- [GENTLE, PET-SAFE] Crafted with a family-first philosophy, our deterrent uses a blend of naturally derived essential oils, including Citronella, Peppermint, and Lemongrass. Used at minimal, pet-safe concentrations, it provides effective guidance for your feline friend while ensuring the air in your home remains fresh and safe for the whole family.
- [INDOOR & OUTDOOR HARMONY] From protecting indoor upholstery and rugs to creating gentle boundaries on patios or garden furniture, this versatile spray adapts to your needs. It helps manage common behaviors such as excessive chewing, scratching, and inappropriate peeing, fostering a more peaceful environment in nearly any situation.
- [CONSISTENT RESULTS FOR LASTING HABITS] While one spray provides an immediate cue, consistency is the key to behavioral change. Simply apply 1–2 times daily to target areas during the initial training period. This routine reinforces house rules, providing a "gentle reminder" to your pet even when you aren't there to supervise.
How can you reduce the risk at home?
- Store medicines, cleaners, laundry supplies, batteries, pool chemicals, insecticides, and diffuser liquids in secure cabinets inaccessible to your cat. Cabinet safety locks may help keep doors shut, but no particular lock is endorsed here.
- Check plant identities before bringing home flowers or houseplants; do not rely on a common name such as “lily.”
- Use only cat-formulated flea and tick treatments on cats, following the label exactly.
- Clean spills promptly and follow product directions for dilution, rinsing, drying, and when pets can return to an area.
- Keep cats away from products while they are being applied and from treated surfaces until the label’s directions allow access.
What should you do if your cat may have been exposed?
- Contact a veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control immediately. The ASPCA number listed for suspected exposure is (888) 426-4435. A corrosive exposure needs immediate veterinary care even if your cat appears normal.
- Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinarian directs you to. Vomiting a corrosive substance can cause further injury.
- Keep the product information available. If safe, have the container or label at hand when speaking with the veterinary professional so they can identify the substance and its concentration.
- Follow professional instructions rather than waiting for signs. The ASPCA household-products guide is general information, not a way to assess or manage a time-sensitive exposure.
