Tremors in cats can come from something temporary, such as cold or fear, or from a serious problem such as poisoning, low blood sugar, pain, or nervous-system disease. Shaking alone cannot identify the cause. Contact a veterinarian about new or unexplained tremors; seek emergency veterinary care if poisoning is possible or the shaking comes with seizures, collapse, severe weakness, or trouble coordinating movement.
Why is my cat shaking?
A tremor is involuntary shaking or twitching. It is a sign, not a diagnosis: several very different conditions can look similar, and an owner cannot reliably determine the cause from the movement alone.
Possible explanations include fear or excitement, cold or low body temperature, pain or injury, fever, toxin exposure, low blood sugar, infection, liver or kidney disease, or an electrolyte imbalance. Tremors may also occur with seizures and other neurological disorders. Parasites, ear conditions, hyperesthesia, and congenital conditions such as feline cerebellar hypoplasia are among the other possibilities described in veterinary guidance. These are possibilities for a veterinarian to assess, not a checklist for diagnosing your cat at home.
Veterinary references group neurological problems under a wide range of causes, including birth defects, inherited conditions, infection or inflammation, poisoning, metabolic or nutritional problems, degenerative disease, cancer, and causes that remain unknown. When should I worry about tremors?
Call a veterinarian promptly for new or unexplained tremors. The urgency rises if onset is sudden, your cat may have reached a toxin, or there are other symptoms. Suspected poisoning is an emergency; do not wait to see whether the shaking passes.
- Go for urgent veterinary care if tremors occur with seizures, collapse, marked weakness, or impaired coordination.
- Treat possible toxin exposure as an emergency. Potential hazards include lawn and garden insecticides, rodenticides, household cleaners, antifreeze, lead, and chocolate. Chocolate can cause abnormal heart rhythms, tremors, depression, and seizures in cats. Cornell Feline Health Center: poisons.
- Pay particular attention to a diabetic cat. Weakness, lethargy, vomiting, poor coordination, seizures, and coma can be signs of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Cornell warns that “Hypoglycemia can be fatal if left untreated.” Cornell Feline Health Center: feline diabetes.
A cat who is alert, able to eat, and trembling after an apparent fright or cold exposure may seem less acutely ill, but context does not confirm the cause. If the tremors are new, persist, recur, or have no clear explanation, contact your veterinarian for advice.

What to do if your diabetic cat may have low blood sugar
Cornell’s guidance is specific to a diabetic cat with possible hypoglycemia; it is not general home treatment for unexplained tremors. Offer the cat its regular food. If it will not eat voluntarily, oral glucose such as honey, corn syrup, or a proprietary dextrose gel may be used, followed by immediate veterinary care. Do not force food or fluids, or put fingers or anything else in the mouth of a cat that is convulsing or comatose. Cornell Feline Health Center: feline diabetes.

Note when the tremors began, how often they happen, how long each episode lasts, and whether anything seems to trigger them. If it is safe to do so, record a video; an episode may not be happening during the examination. Tell the veterinarian about possible access to medicines, pest-control products, chemicals, or other toxins, as well as changes in appetite, drinking, vomiting, urination, and the cat’s environment.

The veterinarian will take a history and examine your cat. Depending on the findings, tests may include blood work, urinalysis, X-rays, CT, or MRI. Which tests are useful depends on the individual case; there is no single test or treatment that applies to all tremors.
