Mr. Darcy arrived at Best Friends Animal Society’s Pet Resource Center in Bentonville, Arkansas, cautious around unfamiliar people and unsure around other dogs. In a story published November 17, 2025, Best Friends describes how time near staff, food rewards, leash-walking practice and stays in foster homes accompanied his gradual shift toward a more affectionate, playful life—and adoption.
Mr. Darcy’s first days at the Bentonville center
Best Friends says it knows little about Mr. Darcy’s life before he came to its Bentonville Pet Resource Center from a shelter. The organization describes him as a three-year-old dog with a white coat and black ears. Around new people he was cautious; around other dogs he seemed unsure how to act. The story characterizes this as social uncertainty, not unfriendliness.
Staff brought him into an administrative office, where he could spend time near people. He enjoyed their company and attention, sometimes sitting on a desk and looking up at his coworkers. The account suggests that a familiar, people-filled setting suited him better than being left to navigate every new interaction alone.
Practice, rewards and experiences beyond the center
Building comfort with people
Food helped Mr. Darcy relax, according to the story. Staff used snacks and peanut butter while he practiced walking on a leash. Best Friends does not give a detailed training plan, say how long the practice took, or identify a particular food or leash. The account is an individual story, not evidence that the same approach will produce the same result for another dog.

Time in foster homes
Mr. Darcy stayed in several foster homes, where he encountered experiences outside the center, including hikes near a lake, new people and other dogs. Best Friends presents these experiences as part of his growing comfort but does not separate their effects or say which mattered most.
As he settled in, the story describes him as affectionate, playful and happy. One favorite activity was running through a sprinkler.
Rank #2
From shelter dog to adopted companion
A family adopted Mr. Darcy. He now enjoys squeaky toys and ear scratches and shares his home with Raina, a tabby cat. His adopter described the bond this way: “He is up there with one of the absolute greatest dogs I have had the pleasure of loving. We are so blessed to be his family.” Best Friends does not identify the adopter by name or provide post-adoption behavior measures.
The story does not specify how long Mr. Darcy stayed at the shelter or center, name the shelter he came from, or report a formal behavior assessment. Its value is as a portrait of one dog’s experience—not a comparison of interventions or a guarantee about how a shy dog will respond.

What Best Friends means by “no-kill”
In this story, Best Friends defines no-kill as saving every shelter dog and cat who can be saved while taking community safety and pets’ quality of life into account. The organization says its goal is to help every U.S. shelter and community reach no-kill, and emphasizes community participation through fostering, adoption and advocacy. That is Best Friends’ framing of the term, rather than a universal definition established by this individual story.
