A second dog is most likely to fit well when your current dog is comfortable around other dogs and your household can meet both dogs’ needs separately. Start by assessing your resident dog’s health, temperament, maturity, and social behavior; then weigh your time, space, and budget. If you decide to proceed, choose for compatibility rather than appearance or sex alone, and introduce the dogs gradually with supervision and separate resources.
Is your current dog ready to share a home?
Begin with the dog who already lives with you. Health, activity level, personality, training, and comfort around other dogs all affect whether a canine housemate is a good fit. A dog who enjoys occasional play at a park may still prefer not to share resting space or daily routines.
AKC advises waiting until a resident dog is mature, trained, and bonded with the household; some breeders suggest waiting until the dog is one to two years old. That age range is guidance, not a universal cutoff. Consider the individual dog’s maturity, health, behavior, and training rather than treating a birthday as proof of readiness. VCA also recommends considering the dog’s health, activity, personality, and existing interactions with other dogs (AKC’s timing guidance; VCA’s introduction guidance).
Address behavior concerns first
Do not get another dog in hopes that it will cure fear, anxiety, or aggression in your current dog. A dog who is uncomfortable around other dogs may find a housemate stressful, and an aggressive resident dog can pose a safety risk to a puppy. Work on existing behavior concerns first; if you are unsure whether your dog can safely live with another, consult a qualified trainer or veterinary behaviorist (AKC guidance on discomfort around other dogs).

Can your household manage two dogs?
A second dog adds more than food and vet visits. Plan for daily exercise, training, supervision, grooming, preventive care, boarding or pet sitting, and the possibility of unexpected veterinary expenses. AKC recommends estimating both first-year and continuing costs, including a contingency for surprises; there is no universal price that applies to every household (AKC’s second-dog affordability guide).
- Time: Can you give each dog individual attention, exercise, and training?
- Space: Can each dog rest undisturbed and eat separately?
- Money: Can you cover routine care for both dogs and handle an unexpected bill?
- Household agreement: Do the adults responsible for care agree on the decision and the work involved?
Shared care still requires planning for separate needs. A new dog may need extra training or gradual adjustment, while your resident dog still needs their usual routine and attention.

How to choose a compatible second dog
Compare the individual dogs’ sociability, energy, play style, age, health, size, handling needs, and known history with other dogs. The aim is not to find a perfect match on paper, but to identify a candidate whose needs and behavior seem manageable alongside your resident dog’s. These factors are a practical comparison guide, not a validated scoring system.
| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Comfort around dogs | Does the candidate appear relaxed around other dogs? What is known about their experience in multi-dog settings? |
| Energy and play style | Will their activity and preferred play suit your resident dog? Could an exuberant puppy overwhelm a quiet or shy adult? |
| Age, health, and activity | Can your household meet each dog’s exercise and care needs, including any health-related requirements? |
| Size and handling | Can you safely manage both dogs during walks, introductions, and moments when they need space? |
| Separate care | Can you provide separate feeding, resting, training, and attention when needed? |
Some advice suggests choosing a dog of the opposite sex, including VCA’s second-dog article. Sex alone does not guarantee compatibility; temperament, past experience, management, and the quality of introductions matter. The available guidance does not establish a rule that applies to every pair (VCA’s second-dog article).

How to prepare and introduce the dogs
Before they meet
- Set up separate feeding and resting areas at home.
- Plan to use gates, a pen, or a crate if appropriate and comfortable for the individual dog, so either dog can take a break.
- Put away food, toys, and other valued items that could trigger competition.
- Arrange one calm handler per dog if possible, and choose a neutral outdoor meeting place.
These preparations make it easier to create distance without forcing either dog to share space or resources before they are ready (VCA’s introduction guidance; AKC’s introduction guide).
At the first meeting
- Start on neutral ground. Keep both dogs on short, loose leashes, with one handler for each when possible.
- Let them observe at a comfortable distance. Allow calm sniffing and approach only while both dogs appear relaxed. Praise calm behavior.
- Keep the interaction gradual. Do not force contact or rush the dogs toward a greeting. Give them room to disengage and take breaks.
- Increase distance or end the meeting if tension appears. Stiffness, staring, lip lifting, a tense jaw, turning away, low posture, or shaking can signal discomfort. A growl is information that a dog needs space; do not punish it or press the interaction.
AKC-quoted trainer Chandra Vail says an initial introduction can last up to an hour, but that is not a target or minimum. Follow the dogs’ behavior, not a clock (AKC’s introduction guide).

Once they are home

- Feed them separately and keep valued items out of shared areas early on.
- Continue individual time with each dog rather than making every activity a group activity.
- Do not leave the dogs alone together until their behavior shows they are compatible.
Adjustment may take days, weeks, or longer. Move at the dogs’ pace, and seek professional help if fear, aggression, or persistent conflict makes the relationship unsafe or difficult to manage (AKC’s timing guidance; AKC’s adult-dog adjustment guidance).
