Yes—feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is now treatable, and many cats can recover. Antiviral medicines, particularly GS-441524, have changed the outlook. But recovery is not guaranteed: diagnosis, treatment choice, supportive care and follow-up all need veterinary oversight.
What FIP is—and what a feline coronavirus test does not mean
FIP develops in a small proportion of cats infected with feline coronavirus (FCoV). The European Advisory Board on Cat Diseases (ABCD) describes FCoV as a widespread feline RNA virus transmitted by the faecal–oral route. Most infections cause no signs or only enteritis; infection does not mean a cat has FIP.
FIP involves inflammation around blood vessels and can affect different organs. Because the disease can present in different ways, it cannot be diagnosed reliably from one symptom or one test alone. A veterinarian assesses the whole clinical picture and may combine examination findings with laboratory results and other diagnostic evidence.
Why the outlook for FIP has changed
Antiviral medicines target viral replication rather than relying on supportive care alone. In its 2026 treatment update, ABCD describes FIP as “a treatable and frequently curable disease.” That is a major change in outlook, not a promise that every cat will respond or recover.

ABCD’s guidance discusses nucleoside analogue antivirals, especially GS-441524, as well as remdesivir, molnupiravir (EIDD-2801) and its active metabolite EIDD-1931. These are veterinary treatment options to discuss with a clinician—not a menu for owners to choose from or administer without supervision. The appropriate medicine, route, dose and duration depend on the cat’s condition, response, available lawful products and the veterinarian’s judgment.
How the main antiviral approaches differ
| Option | What ABCD guidance says | Practical considerations |
|---|---|---|
| GS-441524 | Oral GS-441524 is ABCD’s preferred treatment when available. | Whether it is accessible in a quality-assured, lawful form depends on location. A veterinarian should select and monitor treatment. |
| Remdesivir | Remdesivir is a prodrug of GS-441524. It may be considered in particular circumstances, including when a very ill cat cannot tolerate oral medication or oral formulations are unavailable. | It can be given by injection; injectable treatment may cause pain or local skin reactions. ABCD generally favours oral GS-441524 when it is available and tolerated. |
| Molnupiravir and EIDD-1931 | ABCD’s 2026 update reviews molnupiravir and its active metabolite among other treatment developments. | The update’s discussion does not make these owner-directed alternatives; treatment decisions belong with a veterinarian familiar with FIP. |
Route and availability matter as well as the drug itself. In the 2025 comprehensive guideline, ABCD says oral GS-441524 is usually favoured over injectable remdesivir unless injectable remdesivir is the only antiviral available or the cat cannot tolerate oral medication; IV remdesivir can be used at the start of treatment in that situation. This is clinical guidance, not a prescription for an individual cat.

What the published outcome figures can—and cannot—tell you
Published case series report encouraging outcomes, but they do not establish a guaranteed result for an individual cat or provide a clean ranking of treatment protocols.
- Remdesivir-based treatment in Australia: Coggins et al. (2023), as reported in the ABCD guideline, found that 24 of 28 cats (86%) survived to six months after receiving remdesivir alone or transitioning from remdesivir to oral GS-441524. Among the 25 cats that survived at least two days, 10 needed treatment extended and five also needed a dose increase when relapse was suspected.
- Different regimens in the UK: Green et al. (2023), as reported in the ABCD guideline, found that 26 of 32 cats (81.3%) were alive and in clinical and biochemical remission at the end of an 84-day treatment period. The study was retrospective, the regimens differed and drug availability influenced treatment, so ABCD says protocol comparison was not possible.
Both reports are observational case series, not head-to-head trials. Their results reflect the cats included, their diagnoses and the treatment approaches used; they cannot predict an individual cat’s outcome. Diagnostic certainty also varies in treatment records. In a separate UK retrospective series of 307 cats, Taylor et al. (2023), as reported by ABCD, found FIP confirmed by positive FCoV immunostaining in 10%; 33% were classed as very likely and 58% as highly suspicious using the ABCD diagnostic tool. Those figures describe diagnostic categories, not treatment success.

Why supportive care and follow-up remain important
Antiviral treatment is central, but a cat’s care plan may also need supportive care and individualized pain relief. A veterinarian follows the cat’s clinical signs and laboratory results and adjusts the plan in response to progress or concerns. Improvement should not be taken as a reason to stop or change medication without veterinary advice.
Track weight accurately
Weight can change as a sick cat recovers. ABCD emphasizes accurate weight records because failing to account for weight gain can lead to underdosing, which may be associated with relapse. A home pet scale can help you record weight and share it with the veterinary team; it cannot determine a dose or replace clinical monitoring.

Keep the veterinary team involved
- Arrange prompt veterinary assessment if FIP is suspected; symptoms or a single test cannot establish the diagnosis on their own.
- Ask how the clinician will assess response, which clinical signs and laboratory results they want tracked, and when follow-up is needed.
- Share accurate weight records and report changes or concerns to the veterinary team rather than changing the medicine yourself.
Access and product quality depend on where you live
There is no single worldwide rule for accessing FIP antivirals. ABCD notes that veterinary-compounded products and other treatment routes vary across countries. Ask a local veterinarian about lawful, quality-assured options for your location, and be cautious of internet sellers whose product quality and legal status are unclear.
For one specific regulatory example, Austria’s Federal Office for Safety in Health Care (BASG) stated in a notice dated 9 December 2025 that no veterinary medicinal product containing GS-441524 was approved in the EU. BASG also warned that products from unknown online sources cannot be guaranteed for quality or safety. This is the regulator’s stated position in that notice; it should not be treated as a substitute for checking current rules with a veterinarian or the relevant authority where you live.
