With help from foster carer Dena, the brothers spent two weeks getting used to life in a home before both found homes of their own.
How Armstrong and Joe came to Battersea
In a story published on 23 October 2024, Battersea Dogs & Cats Home shared the journey of brothers Armstrong and Joe. Their mother arrived at Battersea as a stray while heavily pregnant, and the puppies were born there. Battersea arranged for them to stay with an experienced foster carer so they could become familiar with the sights, sounds and smells of a home. Read Battersea’s account of Armstrong and Joe.
What Dena’s foster care involved
Dena had fostered dogs and puppies for Battersea for two years when she cared for the brothers. They stayed with her for two weeks and were away from their mother for the first time. Dena helped them learn basic home routines, including puppy pad training and bedtime, while also managing teething and the work of caring for two puppies at once.
She described the challenge of trying to encourage both puppies during pad training: “The main challenge of having two pups at once was puppy pad training, especially when praising one of them for going on the pads, when the other one wasn’t.” Dena said routine and perseverance helped with the training. Her account describes what worked for this foster placement, rather than setting out a universal puppy-training method.
