Cats.com names Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Renal Support D Morsels in Gravy as its overall pick for cats with kidney disease. That is the guide’s editorial recommendation, not a prescription for every cat: the right food depends on the cat’s diagnosis, CKD stage, phosphorus results and ability to eat enough. Ask your veterinarian to confirm the plan and monitor the diet change.
Best food for a cat with kidney disease
For a cat whose veterinarian recommends a renal diet, a complete therapeutic renal food is generally the place to start. International Renal Interest Society (IRIS) guidance says to consider a renal diet for cats with IRIS stage 2 chronic kidney disease (CKD) and recommends one for stages 3 and 4. The 2026 iCatCare consensus guideline also identifies phosphorus restriction through a renal diet as an initial approach to managing serum phosphate.
Phosphorus is an important comparison, but “low phosphorus” on its own does not establish that a food is a complete therapeutic diet or that it suits a particular cat. A veterinarian should interpret the cat’s lab results and nutritional needs together; these recommendations are not a reason to put every older cat, or every cat with one abnormal test, on a renal diet.

How to compare renal foods for your cat
Check the clinical fit
CKD stage and serum phosphorus results matter more than a general “kidney-friendly” claim. The 2026 iCatCare consensus guideline gives these stage-specific serum-phosphate targets:
Rank #2
- Wx Phos Focused, Chicken Formula in a hydrating purée, 3oz Can (Pack of 12)
- Low levels of phosphorus without sacrificing protein or quality. Formula with up to 50% less Phosphorus than AAFCO's minimum levels.
- Highly bioavailable proteins for optimal digestion & amino acid absorption to help maintain muscle mass.
- Hydration through Bone Free Proteins
- All natural - Free of ingredients such as powdered cellulose, fillers & carbohydrates that superficially lower phosphorus percentages.
| IRIS CKD stage | Serum phosphate target in the 2026 iCatCare consensus guideline |
|---|---|
| Stage 2 | 0.81–1.45 mmol/L (2.5–4.5 mg/dL) |
| Stage 3 | 0.81–1.63 mmol/L (2.5–5.0 mg/dL) |
| Stage 4 | 0.81–1.94 mmol/L (2.5–6.0 mg/dL) |
These are serum lab targets, not the phosphorus content to look for on a food label. Your veterinarian uses the appropriate stage target alongside the individual cat’s condition to guide treatment.
Confirm whether it is a complete therapeutic diet
A food described as low in phosphorus is not automatically formulated as a complete renal diet. Cats.com reports that Weruva Wx Phos Focused has up to 50% less phosphorus than AAFCO minimum recommendations, but also says it is not specifically formulated for CKD and is labeled for intermittent feeding. That comparison does not establish that it is suitable as a cat’s sole food. Check the current package’s feeding directions and discuss its use with your veterinarian.

- Wx Phos Focused, Chicken Formula in Gravy, 3oz Can (Pack of 12)
- Low levels of phosphorus without sacrificing protein or quality.
Prioritize enough food eaten
Phosphorus restriction does not help if a cat will not eat enough to meet calorie needs. IRIS calls for close nutritional monitoring, including attention to intake and body condition. If your cat refuses a proposed food, loses weight or struggles with a transition, contact the veterinarian about alternatives rather than forcing the change. Emma Passman, a commercial pet nutritionist, is quoted in the Cats.com guide as saying, “Proper nutrition plays a crucial role in managing kidney disease and improving your cat’s quality of life.”
Choose a practical texture and format
The Cats.com list includes wet and dry foods, as well as different textures. A cat’s willingness to eat the food is a practical consideration to discuss with the veterinarian; the product list alone does not establish that a particular texture treats CKD better.

How to monitor a renal diet and phosphorus
IRIS advises rechecking serum phosphorus 4–6 weeks after starting a renal diet. If the result is within the appropriate target, IRIS describes reassessment every 3–4 months; it says 4–6 months may be adequate for a cat with stage 2 CKD. These intervals come from IRIS’s current diet guidance, accessed October 5, 2026.
If diet alone does not bring serum phosphorus to the stage-appropriate target after 4–6 weeks, the 2026 iCatCare consensus guideline says a veterinarian can consider a phosphate binder. Binders are veterinary-managed treatments; do not start one or choose a dose without the treating veterinarian.
