What is Cooper the Crafty Cat about?
In Sally Rosenthal’s account for Best Friends Animal Society, Cooper was adopted from a shelter at about two years old by Anita Comisky and her husband, a couple who had considered themselves dog people. They hoped a cat might help with a pest problem; instead, Cooper takes on the role of household supervisor.
From his imagined position of authority, he oversees routines, poolside activity, and the property. His circle of helpers and subjects includes the neighbors’ golden retriever, squirrels, and a heron. The comedy comes from this confident cat’s interpretation of the people and animals around him—not from a guide to cat care or a conventional factual memoir.
How does the book’s feline voice work?
The story is told entirely from Cooper’s point of view. Rosenthal notes that sustaining an animal’s perspective across a whole book is difficult, and writes: “Anita, however, is a deft and perceptive writer who avoids falling into that trap.” She says Cooper’s account kept her believing that he was telling his own tale, and that it had her “laughing out loud.” Those are Rosenthal’s reactions as the reviewer.
