Talk with your veterinarian early, help your pet get comfortable with its carrier or crate, keep it secured during travel, and prepare familiar supplies and records. If you are moving internationally from the United States, begin with the destination-specific process from USDA APHIS.
Start with your pet’s health and the destination
Before you pack, contact your veterinarian to discuss whether your dog, cat, or other companion animal is ready for the trip and how to make it safer and more comfortable. Ask about any individual concerns, such as motion sickness or anxiety, and whether medication might be appropriate. Medication and dosing are veterinary decisions; there is no one-size-fits-all recommendation for moving pets. The American Veterinary Medical Association’s travel guidance recommends discussing travel with a veterinarian.
For an international move from the United States, contact a USDA-accredited veterinarian as soon as you know the destination. Countries set their own entry requirements, which may include a microchip, specific vaccinations, tests, or treatments. The health certificate process and timing can also vary: a certificate may need to be endorsed and used within a limited period. Follow the destination-specific instructions in APHIS’s pet travel process overview rather than relying on a generic checklist.
Choose an enclosure for the animal and the journey
A travel carrier or crate should suit your pet and the way you are traveling. Start familiarization well before moving day: let your pet spend time in the enclosure so it is not encountering it for the first time during a stressful trip. The AVMA recommends acclimating pets to their travel crate or carrier and to suitable restraints.

For air travel, do not assume a carrier that works for one airline, route, or animal will work for another. Check the chosen airline’s current rules before booking. APHIS guidance for air travel addresses kennel size, secure construction and fasteners, ventilation, cleanliness, labeling, animal readiness, and documentation. Review its air-travel preparation guidance, then confirm the actual requirements with the airline.
Prepare for a move by car
Keep your pet secured in an appropriate carrier or restraint while the vehicle is moving. The right setup depends on the animal and vehicle; the available guidance does not establish one restraint type as suitable for every situation. Do not let a dog ride with its head outside a moving car window, as the AVMA advises against this.

Plan stops and keep the essentials together so they are easy to reach. The CDC’s pet travel guidance recommends preparing items such as:
- Food, water, and a bowl
- A leash and waste bags
- Any medication your pet uses, plus first-aid supplies
- Grooming supplies
- Relevant travel documents
Check that your pet’s microchip details and contact information are current. If the drive requires an overnight stop, identify possible pet-friendly lodging in advance and confirm the property’s current acceptance rules and booking terms directly. The FDA’s pet preparedness guidance recommends having pet-friendly lodging options in mind.

If you are flying, verify rules before booking
Airline pet policies vary, so check the policy for your specific airline and itinerary before purchasing tickets. The U.S. Department of Transportation explains the need to consult the airline’s pet rules in its guidance on flying with a pet.
Confirm that the carrier or kennel meets the airline’s requirements and is appropriate for your animal. Also ask your veterinarian whether your pet is fit for the planned trip and whether any health constraints need to be considered. For international air travel, make sure the airline’s requirements and the destination’s entry requirements are both addressed; satisfying one does not establish that you have satisfied the other.

Choose a travel mode around your pet and route
There is no universally best way to move a pet. Compare the practical options using the factors that affect your particular animal and itinerary:
- Your pet: Consider health, size, temperament, and tolerance for travel with your veterinarian.
- The route: Account for journey length and transfers, not just the time in the air or car.
- Rules and enclosure: Check current airline or carrier rules and whether the required enclosure suits your pet.
- Destination paperwork: Find out what documents, deadlines, and restrictions apply at the destination.
- Supervision and supplies: Consider whether you can monitor your pet and keep familiar necessities available during the trip.
