Dog nose work is a scent-search activity in which the dog finds a trained odor while the handler watches and interprets the dog’s behavior. You can do it recreationally without competing; sanctioned K9 Nose Work trials are one specific system, with their own odors, rules, and eligibility requirements.

What dog nose work involves

In nose work, the dog searches for a scent source and communicates its location through behavior the handler learns to recognize. The dog leads the search; the handler’s job is to observe rather than direct the dog to a guessed location.

NACSW (the National Association of Canine Scent Work) describes K9 Nose Work as an accessible, dog-driven activity built around dogs’ natural scenting and hunting behavior. NACSW says the sport was developed in 2006 by Ron Gaunt, Amy Herot, and Jill Marie O’Brien to bring detection-dog-style training to companion dogs. Its mission is to create opportunities for dogs to develop natural scenting abilities and to provide competition, instructor certification, and education in an ethical, enriching, canine-centered environment. See NACSW’s About Us page and mission and organization information.

A class may use different scents or follow another organization’s method. If your goal is to enter NACSW trials, check that the instructor’s odor work and training prepare you for that system.

What dogs search for in NACSW trials

NACSW trials use three target odors: sweet birch (Betula lenta), aniseed (Pimpinella anisum, not star anise), and clove bud. NACSW’s preparation instructions describe odor on half cotton swabs, with a very low volume of oil; a hide typically uses three half-swabs. These specifications apply to NACSW, not to all scent-work classes or competitions. The NACSW target-odor page provides preparation guidance and a current list of authorized suppliers, which can change.

Keep oils and odor materials out of a dog’s mouth. NACSW warns that these materials are not for human or animal consumption and advises consulting a veterinarian about health concerns. Follow the organization’s official odor instructions rather than improvising with unverified essential oils.

How to start training

Find instruction that fits your goal

Look for a qualified local class or instructor who uses a dog-led approach and can explain the odors and methods used. If you may compete, ask whether the class prepares teams for the rules of the intended venue. NACSW’s education division offers instructor certification, but classes outside its system may use different procedures.

Build the foundations

NACSW’s readiness guidance emphasizes teaching the handler to recognize the dog’s communication at source, developing sustained interest in target odor through repeated reinforcement, and practicing in varied environments. Ask the instructor how they help dogs stay engaged and how they introduce new settings without rushing the dog.

Race&Herd Dog Scent Kit — 10 Anise Sniff Pouches, 4" (Sage)
  • TEN POUCHES, NOT SIX — Ten breathable mesh scent pouches, about 4 inches square, with a woven handle tag your dog can carry — enough to hide three, four or five at a time so the game keeps getting harder.
  • REAL ANISE, SEALED INSIDE — Each pouch holds food-grade aniseed in a sewn inner sachet — the liquorice note dogs lock on to. Nothing is sprayed on the fabric; reseal them between games to keep the scent strong.
  • FIVE GAMES, EASIEST FIRST — The printed guide starts where your dog is: let them sniff one, hide it in plain sight, say "find it". It builds to room hunts, garden searches and dragged scent trails. No clicker needed.
  • TEN MINUTES BEATS AN HOUR OF WALKING — Scent work tires a dog mentally in a way exercise alone does not. Works on carpet, grass, soil or snow, in a flat, a hallway or a back garden.
  • A SNIFFING TOY, NOT A CHEW TOY — Double-stitched seams and tag, machine washable in a laundry bag, built for searching rather than shredding. Play supervised and take the pouch back once it is found.

Practice for real search conditions

Training should gradually prepare the team for distractions, surprises, repeated searches, waiting, travel, and the longer rhythm of an event day. The handler also needs to understand the rules for the intended competition level. NACSW suggests seeking instructor feedback, attending workshops or mock trials, and volunteering at an event to learn what a trial day involves. Its guide, How do I Know if I am Ready to Trial?, includes readiness considerations.

What happens in a NACSW trial

NACSW search elements include containers, exteriors, interiors, and vehicles. The title pathway includes an Odor Recognition Test (ORT), NW1, NW2, NW3, and higher-level formats. Hide counts, search conditions, scoring, and title requirements differ by level, so use the current NACSW rule book rather than assuming one trial format applies to every title. For example, the rule book version 12.3, dated July 1, 2024, says NW1 requires a perfect score of 100 points and no more than three faults.

The ORT checks whether a dog recognizes the trial odors and whether the handler can read the dog’s indication. NACSW notes that passing it does not necessarily mean the team is ready for a trial.

NACSW trial age and entry requirements

These are requirements for sanctioned NACSW participation, not prerequisites for recreational nose work. NACSW’s eligibility guidance says a dog must be at least six months old to take an ORT and at least one year old to enter a trial. For trial entry, the dog needs an ORT title and NACSW registration, and the handler must be a current NACSW member. Event organizers may add local requirements. Check NACSW’s trial requirements and eligibility page and the event listing for current details.

NACSW gives about one year as the average training time to trial readiness. That is an organizational guideline, not a fixed waiting period or guarantee: teams progress at different rates, and readiness depends on training and comfort with the event demands.

Is nose work right for your dog?

Nose work offers a structured way for a dog to use scenting behavior, and the dog-led search format can be appealing to many teams. It should not be presented as a proven treatment for reactivity, anxiety, or other health or behavior concerns. The NACSW material cited here describes the activity’s purpose and organizational experience but does not establish quantified independent outcomes for confidence, stress, wellbeing, or behavior.

When choosing a class or competition, compare the practical differences that will affect your team:

  • Odors: Find out which scents are used and whether they match the competition venue you have in mind.
  • Search format: Ask which elements and title system the organization uses.
  • Instruction: Check instructor qualifications and how the training approach fits your dog.
  • Entry process: Confirm any tests, membership, registration, and event-specific requirements.
  • Your dog’s comfort: Consider how your dog responds to the class environment, waiting, travel, and unfamiliar searches.
