What is a Tomini tang?
Tomini tang is the aquarium common name for Ctenochaetus tominiensis, a member of the surgeonfish family Acanthuridae. FishBase records the species in the western central Pacific and describes it as marine and reef-associated, with a recorded depth range of 0–45 m and a usual range of 3–25 m. A 2026 care guide describes Ctenochaetus as bristletooth tangs and explains that their comb-like teeth are adapted to scrape film algae and detritus from rock surfaces. How much aquarium space does a Tomini tang need?
There is no single settled gallon threshold in the care sources. FishStores.org’s guide, updated February 8, 2026, lists a 70-gallon minimum and recommends 90 gallons or more in its quick-reference material. FishLore’s 2013 profile gives a 55-gallon minimum. These are husbandry recommendations, not validated biological cutoffs; tank footprint, swimming room, and the rest of the stocking plan matter alongside volume.

The care guides give overlapping, but not identical, ranges. Treat them as source recommendations for stable marine conditions, not measurements independently tested for this article.

What should a Tomini tang eat?
Plan for algae-forward feeding, with variety rather than reliance on one food. Petco’s 2016 tang and surgeonfish care sheet recommends commercial algae sheets, marine herbivore flakes or pellets, and frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, or mysis shrimp. - Offer algae sheets or another suitable algae food as a regular part of the menu.
- Use marine herbivore flake or pellet foods to add variety.
- Frozen foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, or bloodworms can complement the diet under the general guidance above.
- A simple algae clip can hold a sheet in place; no particular brand or formula is established as necessary.

Are Tomini tangs compatible with tankmates and reefs?
FishLore calls the species reef compatible, while warning that it can be aggressive toward new arrivals and advising caution with other tangs. Read “reef compatible” as a common care-guide characterization, not a guarantee that every Tomini tang will leave every coral or invertebrate alone. Individual behavior, available space, and the aquarium’s stocking all affect the outcome. The available care-guide material does not establish a universal rule for coral or invertebrate interactions.

When planning tankmates, consider both temperament and introduction order. A fish that may challenge newcomers can make later additions more difficult, and keeping it with other tangs calls for particular caution. Do not assume that a general compatibility label predicts how an individual fish will behave in a specific aquarium.

FishStores.org notes that, like other surgeonfish, the Tomini tang has a sharp spine near the base of its tail. Avoid grabbing it or placing hands near the tail; use careful aquarium-handling practices if moving the fish is necessary. FishStores.org care guide.
