Cats can lose fur because of parasites, allergies, infection, irritation, pain, friction, or excessive grooming. Since several causes can look similar, a veterinarian needs to assess the skin and identify the cause before treatment is chosen.
What a bald spot can—and cannot—tell you
Veterinarians call partial or complete hair loss in an area where hair normally grows alopecia. It may be present from birth or develop later. The pattern and condition of the skin can help guide an examination, but the location or appearance of a patch alone cannot confirm its cause. Merck Veterinary Manual explains the types and causes of feline hair loss in its overview of hair loss (alopecia) in cats.
A veterinarian may look for changes such as redness, lesions, or parasites and may recommend tests or, in some cases, a medical or dietary trial. The appropriate treatment depends on what that assessment finds. Cornell’s guide to feline skin diseases describes why examination and cause-specific treatment matter.
Common reasons cats develop bald spots
Parasites, allergies, or infection
Fleas and other parasites, allergic skin disease, and bacterial or fungal infections can cause inflammation and hair loss. Itch may lead a cat to scratch, lick, or chew the affected area. Merck identifies flea allergy dermatitis as the most common cause of acquired symmetric alopecia in cats; that general finding does not establish that fleas or an allergy are responsible for any individual cat’s patch.

Overgrooming driven by itch or pain
A cat may lick or chew fur away, so grooming can be the visible mechanism of hair loss rather than the underlying problem. Itch is a common reason for excessive grooming, and pain may also contribute. Cats can hide signs of itch, and owners may not notice a problem until hair loss or skin lesions become more apparent. Cornell discusses excessive licking in Cats that Lick Too Much; Texas A&M veterinary faculty also notes that overgrooming can have an underlying medical cause in its article on feline alopecia and normal shedding.
Friction or localized irritation
Repeated rubbing from a poorly fitted collar or halter can cause hair loss in the area of contact. A localized patch may therefore reflect friction, but the appearance alone still cannot rule out other skin problems.

Stress as a possibility—not a diagnosis
Stress can be associated with excessive grooming in some cats, but it should not be assumed to be the cause of a bald patch. Medical issues, including itch and pain, should be evaluated first; stress is a consideration when the veterinary assessment supports it.
What to do if your cat has a bald patch
- Arrange a veterinary assessment. Make an appointment for new, persistent, spreading, or otherwise concerning hair loss. Tell the veterinarian when you first noticed it and whether your cat is licking, scratching, or chewing. If your cat seems seriously unwell or the skin is badly injured, seek prompt veterinary advice.
- Describe what you have observed. Note changes in the patch and any grooming or skin changes you have seen. A veterinarian can examine the skin and decide whether tests or a treatment trial are appropriate.
- Use treatment only for the suspected or confirmed cause. There is no one home remedy that addresses every cause of alopecia. Do not apply human medicines, antifungals, steroids, essential oils, supplements, or flea products simply because a patch looks a certain way. A veterinarian may recommend a product or parasite-control plan when it fits the case.
Why a collar or clothing is not a cure
An Elizabethan collar or garment may be useful in a particular case to limit access to an area, if a veterinarian recommends it. It does not identify or treat the cause of the hair loss, so preventing licking alone is not a substitute for assessment.
