Vomiting is a sign, not a diagnosis: how often it happens, what comes up, and how your cat acts afterward help determine how urgently to seek veterinary care.
When to call a veterinarian
Seek prompt veterinary advice if vomiting is frequent, persistent, or occurs with other concerning signs. The right response depends on the whole picture—not just how many times your cat vomits.
- Arrange prompt evaluation for repeated or ongoing vomiting, blood in the vomit, lethargy, weakness, reduced appetite, abdominal pain, dehydration, diarrhea, fever, weight loss, or changes in thirst or urination.
- Contact a veterinarian or emergency clinic immediately if you suspect your cat swallowed a toxin or foreign object. Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinarian specifically directs you to do so; vomiting can worsen injury from some substances. The Cornell Feline Health Center states: “IMPORTANT: DO NOT induce vomiting unless you are specifically directed to do so.”
Veterinary sources offer different frequency guidelines rather than one universal cutoff. Cornell advises prompt evaluation if a cat vomits more frequently than once per week, while Merck lists vomiting more than once or twice daily among circumstances that call for detailed examination. What vomiting looks like—and how it differs from coughing or regurgitation
Vomiting is an active process. A cat may drool, swallow repeatedly, retch, and contract the abdominal muscles before forcefully bringing up stomach or upper-intestinal contents. Regurgitation is usually more passive and may bring up undigested food. Coughing may involve a crouched posture with the neck extended.

These events can be difficult to tell apart by appearance alone. If you can do so without delaying needed care, note what happened before and during the episode, what came up, and how your cat behaved afterward. A video can help your veterinarian distinguish vomiting from regurgitation or coughing. Warning signs still warrant veterinary attention even if you are unsure which event you saw.
Possible causes of vomiting in cats
A hairball is one possible explanation, but vomiting should not automatically be dismissed as “just a hairball.” Other causes range from dietary problems to illnesses requiring urgent treatment.

- Food and digestive issues: dietary indiscretion, food intolerance or allergy, inflammatory bowel disease, and other gastrointestinal conditions.
- Hairballs, parasites, and infections: swallowed hair, intestinal parasites, and infectious disease can all contribute.

How a veterinarian investigates the cause
The veterinarian uses your cat’s history and physical examination to decide which tests are appropriate. Be ready to describe when the vomiting began, how often it occurs, what it looks like, any possible access to plants, medicines, chemicals, or small objects, and changes in eating, drinking, urination, or behavior.

Depending on the signs and suspected cause, evaluation may include blood, urine, or fecal tests; abdominal X-rays; or ultrasound. Endoscopy or biopsy may be considered in selected cases when the cause remains unclear. The workup is tailored to the individual cat rather than following one fixed test sequence.

Treatment depends on what is causing the vomiting and whether it has led to complications such as dehydration or electrolyte and acid-base imbalance. Veterinary care may include fluids, prescribed anti-nausea medication, a diet plan, treatment for parasites or metabolic disease, or removal of an obstruction by endoscopy or surgery. Severe or prolonged cases may need hospitalization.

Ask your veterinarian what to do at home for your cat. Instructions about food should be individualized: a fixed fasting schedule is not appropriate for every cat or cause of vomiting. Do not withhold water unless your veterinarian directs you to, and do not give human medication or induce vomiting without veterinary direction.
